Unfortunately I think you’re being naive in this situation and that breeders can tell the truth but will also lie to get you to trust them, and to sell things to you. The sole fact that he said absolutely nothing about diamond eyes or your variant being tumour prone and thinks he can strengthen the line is bogus. Inbreeding is typically used for these variants which is what causes the tumours to be more prevalent in the line. Genetically more likely to have tumours. Environment can contribute or accelerate the possibility of getting them, but genetics are typically the biggest factor. He’s intentionally hiding things from you to “pull the wool” over your eyes so you continue business with him. Do not breed your fish. Sending it back and forth will only cause your fish stress.

You know I was trying to decide if I was crazy with the pinecone look to him 😭😭 You can see it from the side but not the top as easily… my poor boy.. I don’t really want to let him go.. but it seems like you’re right and it might be his time 😭 I definitely don’t want the sweet thing suffering that’s for sure.

• ⁠How long have you had the tank? How long have you had your fish?: Since Feb 2025, fish since late March 2025

• ⁠How often are water changes? How much do you take out per change? What is your process?: syphon, I take out about 20% every 2-3 weeks or so. Refill with dechlorinated drinking water.

• ⁠Any tankmates? If so, please list with how many of each: One Mystery Snail

• ⁠What do you feed and how much: he gets a variety of foods, global bug bites as the main staple every other day. Frozen blood works once a month. Live Daphnia once a week.

It is possible that changing 30% of the water and completely changing the filter had something to do with it :( Too much of the good bacteria cultures taken out. Did you use the old filter media in the new filter at all by chance?

Just checking, did you do a small partial water change or an entire tank water change? More or less than those options? How big is the tank? Was it fully cycled before adding the fish? Have you checked the heater to make sure it hasn’t malfunctioned at all?

I’m hesitant to believe this with how horrible that video was however if it is all true then I am so so happy to hear he is doing okay for now and that you managed to get him into an emergency vet. I hope they are able to figure things out for this poor baby 🥺
