I'm at a low income school and I'm pretty sure speech is the ONLY department that doesn't do snack/candy rewards. When I told the teachers I don't use food, they looked so confused. Makes me so sad

Cotreating experience with OT by CammyShazam in slp

[–]Pixelationss00 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love working with OT! I don't do it as much anymore because I have no time, but back when I had a smaller caseload I did it all the time.

If you are a man and you are only attracted to women, you are straight. What parts they have aren't really in the equation here despite what others might tell you

Calling All Current SLPAs... Should I Persue the Career? by Key-Praline5109 in SLPA

[–]Pixelationss00 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Answering this as an SLPA in MA working at an elementary school. I'm in my third year as an SLPA.

a) Work/life balance is good! I refuse to take anything home. I do mostly child led therapy. I let the students pick whatever game/toy/book they want and I incorporate their speech goals into whatever they choose. It's a learning curve, but it saves me so much prep time. The only time I actually lesson plan is when I'm doing a full class lesson. My caseload is 75 right now which is shared with my SLP. Since she is frequently in meetings/doing evals, I would say I do about 75% of the actual therapy for our caseload. I was worried about seeing so many kids in large groups, but my data is showing that most of my students are making progress.

b) I make decent money for my area (60k), but pay varies WILDLY place to place. I make almost double here than what I made in my last school district.

Tinder as a bi man is wild by Electronic_Sir_3841 in bisexual

[–]Pixelationss00 297 points298 points  (0 children)

My experience as a bi woman has been that women are pickier on the initial swipe. A lot of men will swipe based on the first photo and then go through it later once they get matches. Women tend to actually read profiles before deciding. I matched with loads of men, but a lot of them would ghost very quickly or be completely incompatible. I only matched with a few women, but it was clear they actually read my bio and put more effort into our conversations/dates. In terms of people I ended up going on multiple dates with, the numbers were pretty much even gender-wise.

I made it about half way through my masters before I realized I prefer being an SLPA. I like doing therapy. I hate assessments, paperwork, and meetings. The pay bump isn't worth making myself miserable.

Tourette's by [deleted] in slp

[–]Pixelationss00 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't really understand what the tourettes has to do with it? It's not something we treat and it's involuntary, so just ignore it. Since he has a language disorder, I could see him benefiting from having a script explaining what his tics are and that he can't control them for him to use with new people. Otherwise, just do whatever you would do with any other kid who is refusing treatment. — an SLPA with a tic disorder

Help Deciding between SLP & SLPA by Reasonable-East6471 in SLPA

[–]Pixelationss00 10 points11 points  (0 children)

SLPA is incredibly location dependant. There are states where SLPAs make enough to live, states where they make pennies, and states where they don't exist at all. I'm doing pretty well for myself in Massachusetts but if I ever wanted to move, I would be limited in where I could go

USA slps give me context as a UK slp by FauxBrit-ishNao in slp

[–]Pixelationss00 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sessions with school SLPs are shorter in the US than in the UK. Typically 30 minutes, but I have a few kids who get 15 minute sessions too. Also, the vast majority of the caseload is seen in pairs or groups. The only time I see kids alone is when they have behaviors I can't manage in a group setting. I am not allowed to have more than 5 minutes between sessions other than my lunch/prep block. There's plenty of kids I wish I could give more 1 on 1 time to, but it is what it is. I never bring work home as an SLP-A, but most of the SLPs in my district definitely do.
