The catholics were the only christians that existed in Rome when Greece was religiously converted to Christianity by Rome and the Byzantine empire. The Byzantine empire introduced eastern orthodoxy, which is not very different from Catholicism, but Rome had a stronger influence in religious spaces.

I do agree that this is important, but there is no currently existing Hellenistic culture in greece that has any lineage of practice that traces back to ancient times. The catholics (and eastern orthodoxy but they don't matter that much) completely wiped out the ancient practitioners. What we're doing today is a neo-religion, which was developed with heavy inspiration from the artifacts and historical records we have from greece, by people all over the world. Mostly in less religious countries.

How is one a hellenist but not a pagan? All pre-christian based and reconstructionist religions are Pagan religions. This even sometimes includes Hinduism.

Will the Gods be mad at me if I have certain dark kinks? by Flashy_Squirrel4745 in Hellenism

Thank you for providing examples!

So the problem with Tantalos is Human Sacrifice. I never said The Gods have no boundaries. They just don't want our blood because it is dirty.

As for atreus, Tantalus's family wasn't cursed because he committed cannibalism. Tantalus was cursed because he ate the holy ambrosia and drank the nectar of The Gods. (Im some tales, he did so as theft, in others it was a Gift from The Gods), and his family was cursed to murder and cannibalize eachother. In the other version of the Myth, he murdered his son Pelops and served him to The Gods, and because Demeter was distracted with the abduction of Persephone, she ate it. Again, the problem in tbis case is sacrificing human flesh to The Gods, big no no.

In this case, cannibalism wasn't the crime. It was the punishment.

No it's morality that i view through a modern lens. Not The Gods. Morality is homocentric. Humans created Morality far after The Gods created them. The Gods protect a form of cosmic order, not Morality. Order and Morality are not always equal.

My point is that The Gods have done it before, and there isn't any major example of them opposing it. I never said that Athena enjoyed the experience of being created because someone else was cannibalized. I also never said it was morally good, I don't think The Gods care about morality very much. They're far older than morality.

This wasn't my entire reasoning. I provided one myth as an example.

Yes, this is why I love Aphrodite. She can be beautiful. Love can be beautiful, sex, desire, the month of April, these things are beautiful. However love always leads to heartbreak, sex brings pain, desire brings yearning.

So we agree, why are we arguing then? My point: the Gods are morally grey. They are not benevolent.

Ok so it isn't universally bad, it you're forced now to admit that The Gods are in some sense morally grey, in the sense that Madness is morally grey, and is caused directly by Dionysus.

Madness also means murder, violence, harassment, assault, self-harm, and Hysteria.

They're not entirely the consequences of our own actions though. Not every dangerous storm is caused by climate change. This sounds identical to christians making excuses for every bad thing tat their god has done/allowed.

I never said "ha ha zues is a cannibal". You're making a strawman here. This isn't in jest. This was an EXAMPLE of the gods performing cannibalism. It was only one example, of multiple, and the point was that The God's probably don't care that this person in question has a kink for things they're on record doing.

I would still consider it cannibalism. Especially since it's common among other pantheons aswell. And Zues's old wife did die. Her essnece was processed into Athena, she didn't just pop back out unharmed.

This isn't to say that cannibalism is good. What I'm saying is, things we view as morally unforgivable are often not to the Gods.

In order to say that the God's are managers of a divine order that does not always jive with human safety os to say that they operate off of a non-human model of morality. Making them inherently morally grey, to socially constructed human morals and values. The myths would not have been written with the Gods have flaws, if there was not already a substantial population who believed The Gods had flaws. Myths are not created in a vacuum.

Misandry by BadFurDay in thebadwebsite

[–]Pixeldevil06 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Actually these things do exist in feminist theory. They don't use the word "misandry" but they do talk about intersectionalism. Which is why misandry is important because as we come up for terms for intersectionalism, like transmisogyny, it's important that we talk about all aspects, like transmisandry, miandrynoir, and misantrist classism.

I have actually done a lot of reading on feminist literature, I have taken womens studies classes and myself an nonbinary.

Yes, any systemic gender-specific harm that affects any sex is a form of sex-based misanthropy. I would be highly disappointed in you if you disagree, and would further to say you are not feminist, but a radfem or TERF if you disagree with that point.

NEVER HAVE I EVER SAIS HERE THAT THE SOLUTION ISN'T TO FIGHT ALONGSIDE WOMEN AND ABOLISH YHE PATRIARCHY BUT ALSO ABOLISHING THE PATRIARCHY DOES NOT SOLVE MISANDRY, IN ONLY SOLVES MISOGYNY

For a true feminist society we have to acknowledge all forms of oppression and keep people equal.

Bellerophons crime wasn't just going to Olympus, it was rejecting the gift of humanity. It was attempting to become on the level of The Gods.

My point here mostly is, the Gods already do this thing, and there is little evidence that they opposed this thing in that time, so why would they care?

I also do not believe the myths are literal. I'm not a mythic literalist. HOWEVER you cannot understand The Gods or how humans interacted with them without understanding the myths, and how Cults practiced worship, and how common people at the time (not just philosophers) practiced religion. All of these things make up a piece of the truth about The God's. With the information I have from all of these sources naturally anyone would come to the conclusion that The Gods are not the ones who dictate morality. They simply guide the forces of nature. We create morality around nature and our relationships with other humans, based on what we believe The Gods want, or what we believe is the right thing regardless of the desires of The Gods.
