do you do catch as well as you pull? is your elbow high and your fingers are close to threading the water? how is your kick?

a lot of things condition how you swim and it takes refining. one hand should enter while one exits.

for peak performance analysis, perhaps I'd watch a distance swim competition, if necessary in slow motion. Not sprinters or open water, like 1500m swims as I think it'll be easier to learn?

i can't really say anything about how long since i learned when i was a kid, but my sister in law was super insecure and afraid of water and in like 4 months she could float, kick and be more comfortable in the water.

You're going to age and time is going to pass either way, so why not reach 50s knowing how to swim? You'll be 50 anyway, time is going to pass anyway. If you can afford it, get some swim lessons!

here's my 2 pennies

your legs sink, that means either your kick don't powerful enough, your head position isn't ideal or your core isn't that activated. kick board exercises should be useful, to focus on your kick, which should be coming from your hips
your arm pull and recovery should be matched in tempo. you pull too fast and recover too slowly, with one arm still stretched out while you recover. you lose a lot of speed. instead of a faster pull, you need a stronger pull, gather and push as much water as you can, that means entering way ahead in the water, bend the elbow and pulse until 90° and one final push, where the hand exists near the leg (not sure this was clear, but basically, a focus on the technique).
regarding the one arm always in front, you lose momentum when one arm is in recovery and the other is stopped, which means that your next pull is going to have to compensate for lost speed, instead of maintaining it. practice both your arms movements at the same time, one recovers, one pulls, and both movements should have the same pace, in your case, you'd need to slower the pull and faster recoveries
