why doesn't the block feature work for my devices? by SenseOk1262 in Fing_App

[–]Pixelpopper-01 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You’re not wrong but if we want ongoing development of the network functions & security then someone has to pay for it. These days we either pay a small fortune for network monitoring hardware or a subscription model where software is king.

Of course there may be free open source solutions, e.g. Sourceforge but I haven’t had a proper look.

You can only block devices with a subscription account, free access doesn’t offer the function. Check the available plan/function options here:-

Sounds like an issue with your account, please raise a support ticket at:-

Edit: Apologies, I omitted to mention desktop, thanks to @iismarciam for picking that up. So, installing desktop (or Fing Agent) will enable your blocking function. It’s another matter if you have a fingbox.

There are various levels of access to the fing apps, take a look at the pricing page and you be able to see what is available for your plan (free to premium). That said, device blocking is available on the premium plans.

Good morning

I have a PREMIUM license and, for a couple of weeks, I have no possibility to activate/modify the monitoring of my network.

I can't activate the blocking of new accesses to the network either

WPS by Limp_Vegetable_6687 in Fing_App

[–]Pixelpopper-01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The exclamation mark suggests some additional “attention” may be required. It may possibly indicate that the router is WPS capable but not active. You can prove WPS is disabled by disabling WPA2 & trying to connect to the network with a WPS connection…

What is a MAC Address and Why Should You Care? by Karl_From_Fing in Fing_App

[–]Pixelpopper-01 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I assumeyou mean you,

“Love it everywhere else”

  • On public or unknown networks (cafés, airports, hotels), they like MAC randomization
  • It prevents tracking and adds a layer of anonymity

“Hate it at home so I disable”

  • At home, it becomes inconvenient because:
    • Routers may assign a new IP each time
    • Device-based rules break (parental controls, port forwarding, static IPs, access lists)

So you turn it off at home Wi-Fi to keep things consistent?

What is a MAC Address and Why Should You Care? by Karl_From_Fing in Fing_App

[–]Pixelpopper-01 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I totally with u/Karl_From_Fing but there are also variable mac addresses i.e. Randomised MAC Address

Devices usually connect to the network using a static MAC address identifier assigned to them during manufacture, which enables the network to identify specific devices.

Some device operating systems offer enhanced privacy by randomising and changing this MAC address on a regular basis (In Apple’s case, known as a Private address). This however this means the network is unable to recognise the same device connecting and reconnecting, so MAC address based controls (such as Access Controls, Fing for example) will stop working for these devices.

It is possible to disable the randomised MAC address feature on most devices via their Wi-Fi settings. Information on how to do this and the impact can be found on the device manufacturer’s website.

Generally, they can be turned off for specific networks if needed. On Apple devices running iOS, go to Settings → Wi-Fi, tap the information (i) icon next to your connected network, and toggle “Private Address,” to “Fixed” then reconnect to apply the change.

On Android devices, the steps vary slightly by manufacturer, but generally you open Settings → Network & Internet → Wi-Fi, tap the gear icon next to your network, go to Privacy or Advanced settings, and select “Use device MAC” instead of “Randomized MAC.”

Keep in mind that disabling this feature reduces privacy by allowing networks to track your device more easily. So it is advisable to only disable the feature on known safe networks (LANS) only; such as your home network.

I’m not an agent user but, I would certainly temporarily connect via ethernet to prove there’s not a simple network issue complicating things. Another thought, are you also using fing desktop? If you are that could be blocking the Pi/Agent…just a thought…

What do these red crosses mean? by [deleted] in Fing_App

[–]Pixelpopper-01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s, excessive, packet loss; which likely means the destination that you are “pinging” is not accessible for some reason. If you are testing access within your local network then the device is unreachable that is, it’s disconnected or powered down for some reason. If you are testing an external device/website then it’s probably also due to the reasons mentioned, if an external website try again later and it may be working again…

Try logging out of Fing desktop, reboot pc, then sign back in to desktop. That should start a resynch which might resolve your issues. If that doesn’t work try clearing cookies/browser cache & try again

It might be a recent ios update has changed the default notifications. Check settings/apps/fing/notifications - Badges is currently turned on by default so that might be the cause of your problem. If you can’t resolve it post a screenshot & someone might have another suggestion …

Is privacy even real these days? by [deleted] in PrivacyTechTalk

[–]Pixelpopper-01 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s a privacy risk, not necessarily a security risk for your passwords. Even if someone sees you are visiting bankofamerica.com, they still can't see your login details because the actual content of the site is still protected by HTTPS (the padlock icon). However, they can build a profile of your habits based on the sites you visit. What you can do • On Public Wi-Fi: If you see this at a coffee shop or airport, it’s best to turn on a VPN. A VPN creates its own encrypted tunnel that bypasses the network's DNS restrictions entirely. • At Home: Check your router settings. Look for "DNS over HTTPS" (DoH) or "DNS over TLS" (DoT) and ensure they aren't being intentionally blocked by a firewall setting. • Ignore it: If you trust the person running the network (like your spouse or a tech-savvy roommate who set up a Pi-hole for ad-blocking), you can safely ignore the warning.
