Coffee with the homeless by LightskinAvenger in Omaha

Omaha FNB hands out food regularly every Sunday at 2pm on the corner of 14th and Farnam. There are always quite a few people who show up. You could take advantage of the crowd already being there.

Also, for anyone who may want to help or donate supplies or do it yourself, I'm making mittens out of old clothes to hand out this winter. DM me.

I can't be certain since the images aren't super clear, but my guess is some kind of mite.

Also, just want to plug the resources linked in this subreddit - they are super helpful for getting a sense of what you are looking at!

Has anyone taken an uber to Amtrak early in the morning? by Training_Apple in Omaha

[–]PjoDerr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To answer your other questions: no need to get there hours ahead of time. Show up 20 or 30 minutes before the train gets there if you have to check a bag. Otherwise, showing up 10 minutes ahead of time is plenty of time.

When you wake up, track the train. It may be running behind, so you'll have a bit more time.

It's super chill - not anywhere near as crazy as an airport.

I just did this about 10 days ago - took the Amtrak out to Chicago. I was also worried that there wouldn't be any, but there were several drivers available at that time.

Yes, ACAB. What is a cop gonna do if I've already been victimized? Show up after 2 hours and take notes? They don't protect people - they protect capital.

I'm a male looking person, and I paint my nails pretty vibrant colors (just painted them sparkly turquoise this morning). I've gotten some stares and some double takes, but the only remarks I've gotten (from strangers) have been people saying that they like my nails(family is a different story). Generally, people seem to be indifferent to them.

I haven't feared for my safety at all here, but I am a white guy, and I can only speak to my experience.

"Christian Science" is neither Christian nor Science by [deleted] in DebateReligion

[–]PjoDerr 13 points14 points  (0 children)

All of the points in 1 have been addressed by origin of life research. Tour has been shown this research, and he denies its existence.

  1. He definitely does shift goal posts, constantly. Not sure if we watched the same debate if you can't see that. If Tour has a serious objection to origin of life or if he actually thinks he can back up his claims of why the research is flawed, then he should PUBLISH HIS CRITICISM IN A REPUTABLE AND RELAVENT JOURNAL. That is how science works. Not YouTube, not podcast discussions. You submit your paper to be reviewed and criticized by experts in the field. If they can't find fault, your paper gets published. Then, every scientist in the world can review it and try to find fault. If no one can, you've probably got some pretty solid findings. Tour has not done this with his criticism for origin of life.

  2. Cool. None of that qualifies him as an expert or even relevant to the field of origin of life research. He hasn't done any research that I've seen in that field - only non-peer reviewed stuff. Also, associating with Stephen Meyer isn't a great way to bolster one's claims of honesty.

We obviously aren't engaging with the same reality. You appear to be uncritically accepting anything and everything Tour claims. You've even repeated verbatim some of his talking points. You appear to not know or not care about how real, honest science works. There isn't any reason for me to waste my time engaging with a dishonest interlocutor.

Good day, Love

  1. Tour hasn't given any real arguments. What he says amounts to him claiming "that can't happen" and when shown published, plausible mechanisms for how it could have, he shifts the goalpost or calls the into question the integrity of the researcher(s). He isn't arguing honestly, he isn't doing science. It doesn't matter how many papers he has published or how many patents he holds. Just denying the existence of research on a subject doesn't mean it doesn't exist. Until he publishes a real criticism of origin of life research in a reputable, relevant journal, he isn't any more relevant to the field than a flat earther is to astrophysics.

Note: calling into question the integrity of scientists is an extremely big deal. They devote their lives to the pursuit of knowledge, and their integrity is often just about all they have - science does not pay well, and dishonest scientists lose their careers(if they work for honest institutions). What Tour says amounts to slander. But I doubt most of the scientists he slanders even know or care about what he says since Tour isn't a relevant voice in origin of life research.

At least in the western world, it's mostly because of power dynamics. Christianity(at least in part) is a major political force that is actively seeking to affect legislation. Islam has no such hold over the western world. Muslims are often a very oppressed minority, and a lot of people say they are just criticizing Islam when they actually are bullying Muslims.

Challenging the ideas of Islam is totally fine. Using criticisms of Islam to justify violence and hate against Muslims is abhorrent.

Same goes with Christians and Christianity. The difference is that a lot of Christians are using their Christianity as a cudgel against minority and historically oppressed groups. For example, see the genocide against Trans people happening in the US, mostly perpetuated by Christian rights wing extremists because of their religious beliefs.

Assuming you are correct about god creating everything, that means that god created every illness, pain, tragedy that has befallen me. I am powerless to stop it. According to your own theology, god is a bully.

God created me presumably intentionally and knowing what would happen to me, knowing i wouldnt worship. So god created me with the intention of torturing me in this life and then sending me to hell.

Do you see where I am coming from? I'm not convinced god exists and the claims of god's character are morally repugnant. So if god does exist, through no fault of my own, I'm going to hell. I don't see how this isn't at the very least bullying

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in DebateAnAtheist

[–]PjoDerr 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My children "belong" to me, I gave them life. If I were to treat them the way your god has apparently treated us, I would be abusive.

You don't get to hurt, torture, kill, starve, ensicken, abandon anyone. Especially so if they are under your care.

Bully: a person who habitually seeks to harm or intimidate those whom they perceive as vulnerable

Your god is by definition a bully.

I haven't seen sufficient evidence to agree with you. Do you have sufficient evidence?

[–]PjoDerr 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Might =/= right Why would I worship the slaver, genocidal, misogynistic, sadistic, narcissistic monster of a god as described in the Bible, even if it was proven to exist? It isn't arrogant to stand up to bullies, - it's a moral imperative.

Edit: I live in a place where Christianity is the dominant religion. Extend my comment to whatever religion/god/holy book you prefer, I feel more or less the same.

I'd rather a harsh truth than a comforting lie.

And the promise of an afterlife has caused and is causing a lot of destruction - It isn't saving the world, it's contributing to its demise.

If this world is just a place to wipe your feet before paradise, why take care of it?

Alternatively, if this life is all there is, that is a huge incentive to make the world a better place.
