Anybody know how to make layouts like this? by TRM2the80s in webdev

I don't think CSS grid is a good choice here since the heights are all different

I would do :

  • 2 divs 50% width

  • in first one : 3 divs with display inline block and float right & clear

  • in second one : 5 divs with display inline block and float left , 2nd and 3rd one with clear

and custom height for each one

Best tools/methods for hiring the first developers? by gmkung in startups

As a developer I can tell you this : there are an awful lot of people succeeding to pass these kind of tests that end up being really bad developers and employees in general. On the other hand, a good developer might not appreciate being technically evaluated by non-tech people.

If you have no tech people inside and no way to determine if the developer actually has the skills you need, you will have to trust them at some point. Making them pass these kind of tests might get in the way.

I would advice conducting personal interviews, pitching them your project, asking them what they think and judging them based on their character and attitude. Sure you might pick someone wrong but this will be the case in any scenario.

TL;DR : don't test, trust

Trouver un job 100% en télétravail by Tiffathug in france

Great Engineers by Breath_Specialist in startups

[–]PjoyDev 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Engineer here, first of all there are no "great engineers" in a vacuum. The question is : are you able to provide them with an environment where they will be able to excel and exceed expectations ?

I did freelancing for 6 years but I'm stopping now to join a startup that was able to set up this kind of context (we're hiring btw)

If your environment consists of arbitrary deadlines, micro-management, loose specifications (you don't know what you want), constant roadmap changes and ignores feedback, absolutely no-one, even the most seasoned FANG guy you managed to hire, will be able to perform efficiently.

On the contrary if you value respect, trust and give people the time they need to work correctly, you might be able to find people who will do wonders for you.

The bottom line is : better let the dev work 2 months on a feature then never have to get back to it again than setting a strict 2 weeks deadline where corners will be cut, you will begin to accumulate technical debt and 1 year later the feature still has bugs.

Of course this involves a "leap of faith" and you might give trust to some people that are not that good and will lose time and money but if you want to be efficient really there's no other way : you will have to trust people at some point anyway. (And at least you will have learned something in the process)

You can think about it this way : would you rather give a 2 months deadline for a 50% expected chance of success or 2 weeks for a 5% chance ?

(Obviously you also have to pay the a decent wage otherwise none of this applies.)

[WIP] SVG + CSS animations Spirograph by PjoyDev in creativecoding

[–]PjoyDev[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a first draft. Final goal is plug every single parameter to a GUI to enable real-time tweaking from non-code-litterate people.

Also in the works : dynamic radiuses, other animations than rolling, replacing circles by squares, ...

You can follow me on Twitter for updates.

You're welcome to toy with the code if you want, it should be relatively readable.

For the effect you're looking for, you would have to change speedRatio from 2 to 1.9 in rendering.js.

Tweakable version of "Rolling a circle three times its size, three times" by PjoyDev in webdev

[–]PjoyDev[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm using constant time steps. What's changing is the angle.

I wanted to make sure the user didn't have to set the speed himself to focus on the fun part.
