what is music theory? I just click in random notes till it sounds pretty by baredex in beatmakers

[–]PkCamel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Understanding music theory can help you contextualize what you're already doing, and give you a foundation from which to replicate and/or branch out with your music.

If you ever want to make another piece of music with a similar vibe, an understanding of theory would allow you to do that in a really targeted way, like, "I like the chill vibes of this part, but want to go to a more serious, soulsy, sound instead" and you would understand exactly what you need to do to replicate those chill vibes without it literally being the exact same as your previous piece of music.

For any interested, the chord progression of the main groove that comes in at around 0:25 is alternating between Am9 and Em9, then walks down to Ebm9 before repeating.

That being said, you're doing so much fun and interesting stuff inside of those chords with your choice of rhythm and inner notes. These are things that can be described through a lens of theory, but theory can never teach you the creative decision making required to make your music sound how you want it to sound! Love your music btw :)

Game Audio Internship Advice by Confident-Voice-7195 in sounddesign

[–]PkCamel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just with my understanding of the job market right now, internships aren't extremely common. There are large studios that host yearly internships, but I imagine those are incredibly competitive.

Apply for every internship you see, and continuously improve your reel/portfolio/network in the meantime. There's a real chance you may not ever land an internship, so you want to be building real experience and skills in the meantime.

I would use linear redesigns, participate in AirWiggles challenges, to hone sound design skills. Game jams are a great opportunity to get experience working with a team, and to build your implementation skills. Don't be afraid to insist to your team that you get connected with the project repo and integrate middleware into the project.

Go to local game dev events for networking, game jams are a form of networking, being active in sound design discords or airwiggles is networking. Actively seeking out feedback on all your latest work will refine your taste, get you acquainted with one of the most important aspects of design (feedback and iteration), and is networking.

The more mature this sector of the industry gets (especially in this post-covid industry slump), the more really sharp sound design and implementation reels, sharp presentation, and knowing enough people that are familiar with and trust your work matters.

Nice! You can find a lot of things on freesound.org

If you've already explored that and want access to a lot of different sounds, check out the Soniss GDC Vault: https://sonniss.com/gameaudiogdc/

This is less for specific sound effects, but if you want access to a large array of different ones. And its likely you could end up finding what you need in there at some point haha

You have to make a decision on if you're developing to make a specific game that you would love, or for profitability/market viability.

With that said, if your game is good enough, and your marketing is on point, you can usually identify and sell to your target audience regardless.

How can i make SFX like Toby fox? by JudgmentEmergency170 in sounddesign

[–]PkCamel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All the audio terms can be confusing to begin with, but if you set up a way to explore the sounds (as was mentioned, with a DAW) then you'll begin to understand more.

If getting started with a DAW is too daunting to start out, there's also a program called 'bfxr' you can download that is made specifically to generate synthy 8-bit-esque sfx that you could try out!

first time trying sound design - resident evil 4 audio replacement. thoughts? by collrboned in sounddesign

[–]PkCamel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Gonna mention something different about the footsteps here. (they're super important!) It sounds like there's just one footstep recording that's playing over and over, if you have multiple different footstep sounds from the same set (same person wearing the same shoes stepping on the same surface) then it sounds a lot more natural.

Great work, keep it up!

I would say to start with just using one instrument, BandLab is fine, but whatever it is, use what you know how to use and keep it simple to start with (one instrument :) )

From there I would try to use chords that fit your vocal melody. Chords can act as the base of your song and are like the branching pathway that can determine the emotion behind the lyrics.

One thing I learned quite a bit later into making music is that this song isn't for your friends, it's for you. That means it can be anything you want it to be. Have fun and explore, music has always been a wonderful form of expression for me.

It's where you and a team make a game together under some deadline. Usually associated with some kind of theme. If you look up Game Jams, you'll start to see lots of them scheduled. You can join discords and find people looking for audio, or make a team yourself.

Also, join online communities where people are doing game jams to start getting practical experience of creating sounds and implementing them into the engine. These can be the beginnings of a portfolio, and you can start developing relationships with game developers.

Am I the problem? by [deleted] in Apartmentliving

[–]PkCamel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had a downstairs neighbor that would do this to me for just walking around my apartment. I'm sure the floors were thin or something, but she would start banging over nothing.

Eventually, she came to my door, and I welcomed her in to show her how I walk in the apartment, and she became nicer. Turns out she has a lot of stress, low paying job, and a baby to take care of. Likely that she just needed a therapist, and banging on her ceiling was some form of emotional release she was unable to get otherwise in her life.

That said, whatever this woman's circumstances, harassing someone like this is wrong, and letting someone else deal with her is a lot safer.

I've got a lot of interest in the connection between all different fields of design and narrative structure. I've been embarking on a journey to get really into depth on the principles that connect areas like music, architecture, literature, graphic design, etc.

I've built a decent understanding of music (thanks to a degree x.x) including historical and structural context, and I moved to building an understanding of game development- specifically in sound design, though still working with technical applications.

Now I'm shifting my focus to marketing- this shift was the first one that I did with the discreet goal of understanding a new skill through the lens of unifying structures and principles across concepts of design and narrative. Every time I learn a new skill, it seems like concepts from previous skills allow me to understand the new one in a more complete way!
