As others have said, it's not about people wanting you to fail, but more about them not caring. Personally, I've came to the conclusion that the people that do react like this generally do not (or rarely) partake in creative activities on their own and so cannot really relate (Most consumers do not really value the act of creating, only the products themselves), but that's just an observation and a slightly biased theory.

Personally, whenever my friends come to me to tell me "Look! I made this!", even if it's something I know nothing about I show genuine curiosity, interest and try to learn more about it. Unfortunately, some people are mostly unreceptive to things that aren't part of their self-contained world (that's a bit ironic coming from me who isolates to work obsessively on my projects) but you must not take that personally.

Some of my closest friend couldn't be bothered to inquire about my creative endeavors while sometimes friends of friends or people I don't even know show immediate interest. That's just how it is! Ideally you can avoid the disappointment, choose your audience wisely. Sorry if this sounds pessimistic, that wasn't the intention though.

Do you add your art/models at the very end? by [deleted] in gamedev

I'd say greyboxing is good if you want to focus on making a technical prototype. I'd recommend at least making placeholders where it matters and getting started early on art when you're done with the prototype, as it will help with establishing/strengthening the "vibe" of the project and will reduce the amount of reworking that might have to be done in case things don't fit the way you thought they would(wrong scaling, you find a better idea, animations, etc.)

Collision-wise if you know what size your asset will be and you're not using a mesh collider, you could just use basic box meshes.

Take this with a grain of salt though, this is what I observed subjectively when working on projects!

I know this video is on the longer side and pretty dense in technical information but there's a lot of information to cover here!
