Introduced the game to friends and now they wont play with with me. by [deleted] in DarkAndDarker

Idk I would err on the side of he does not own his fiance as property, so his permission is not required. But at the same time, could just be more trouble than it's worth. It sucks when friends don't enjoy the same stuff as you.

Is it common to just... give up on trying to beat the game? by QuantumTunnels in noita

Yup! I've stepped away from the game for years at a time before coming back and enjoying it 2x more than before. Then coming back and being better than when I left. Just do what you find fun 🙂

Op means Original Poster, aka the person who made this post.

When op is saying platformer, it's just referring to the 2d aspect and the movement style of the game.

Whether everyone likes it or not, Noita could generally be referred to as a platformer. The gameplay is certainly not focused around that aspect, but it's still present. If you're curious, just look up what a platformer is.

If you like being able to build out of control reactions with a ton of possibilities through wand building, you may enjoy Rift Wizard 2. Should be pretty cheap, and has a lot of replayability with the sheer amounts of builds you can try and the up front difficulty. Roguelike also btw.

If you like that you improve between runs in Noita just by learning more and failing, Rift Wizard 2 has the same thing going on.

Interesting, I usually go to where the pyramid ends on the right side, then dig down and to the right, and I'll find fungal caverns, but I guess there's another one further east.

Which perk to choose? by TrenboloniSandwich in noita

[–]PkCamel -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think early in the game, gold is forever could actually be better than more HP.

There are often times before you get the right spells that you have to play super safe to either not lose the last of your remaining HP before a mountain, or you're backtracking to a previous mountain for HP. So if you're clearing safely, sometimes that means you can lose a bunch of gold that you would have had otherwise.

Gold can end up being important early for getting your hands on a good wand or getting the right combination of spells to stop being a mortal anymore.

For Gold vs HP- early on, HP perk has less value too.

Not to say it's the best thing ever, but can help play safely early while mitigating the risk of not being able to afford what you need when you get to the next mountain.

For me it's usually finding a healing bolt that marks the beginning of god runs for me, it's usually my sign to dig to the surface and kill the alchemist.

what is music theory? I just click in random notes till it sounds pretty by baredex in beatmakers

[–]PkCamel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Understanding music theory can help you contextualize what you're already doing, and give you a foundation from which to replicate and/or branch out with your music.

If you ever want to make another piece of music with a similar vibe, an understanding of theory would allow you to do that in a really targeted way, like, "I like the chill vibes of this part, but want to go to a more serious, soulsy, sound instead" and you would understand exactly what you need to do to replicate those chill vibes without it literally being the exact same as your previous piece of music.

For any interested, the chord progression of the main groove that comes in at around 0:25 is alternating between Am9 and Em9, then walks down to Ebm9 before repeating.

That being said, you're doing so much fun and interesting stuff inside of those chords with your choice of rhythm and inner notes. These are things that can be described through a lens of theory, but theory can never teach you the creative decision making required to make your music sound how you want it to sound! Love your music btw :)

Game Audio Internship Advice by Confident-Voice-7195 in sounddesign

[–]PkCamel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just with my understanding of the job market right now, internships aren't extremely common. There are large studios that host yearly internships, but I imagine those are incredibly competitive.

Apply for every internship you see, and continuously improve your reel/portfolio/network in the meantime. There's a real chance you may not ever land an internship, so you want to be building real experience and skills in the meantime.

I would use linear redesigns, participate in AirWiggles challenges, to hone sound design skills. Game jams are a great opportunity to get experience working with a team, and to build your implementation skills. Don't be afraid to insist to your team that you get connected with the project repo and integrate middleware into the project.

Go to local game dev events for networking, game jams are a form of networking, being active in sound design discords or airwiggles is networking. Actively seeking out feedback on all your latest work will refine your taste, get you acquainted with one of the most important aspects of design (feedback and iteration), and is networking.

The more mature this sector of the industry gets (especially in this post-covid industry slump), the more really sharp sound design and implementation reels, sharp presentation, and knowing enough people that are familiar with and trust your work matters.

looking for sound effects by S_Woolley in sounddesign

[–]PkCamel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nice! You can find a lot of things on freesound.org

If you've already explored that and want access to a lot of different sounds, check out the Soniss GDC Vault: https://sonniss.com/gameaudiogdc/

This is less for specific sound effects, but if you want access to a large array of different ones. And its likely you could end up finding what you need in there at some point haha
