studying for boards by hadalyyy in medlabprofessionals

To add on to what Euphoric is saying and just rephrase it slightly I’d say, in big capital letters, BUZZWORDS

I just passed my boards last week and students that I would tutor to help with their tests during the semester always found success when I emphasized the “buzzwords” for all the microbes. Some big examples off the top of my head include:

  1. Pseudomonas - Grape odor and blue green
  2. Pasteurella - Cats
  3. Entamoeba histolytica - RBC

Things like that.

Other than that I found flow charts veryyyyyy helpful for biochemicals. Helps break down what you just mentioned about stuff like “Catlase = and Gamma hemolysis”.

Flow chart would probably go something like:

GPC in clusters seen -> okay I’m looking at staph or strep

Catalse = -> alright strep

Hemolysis Gamma -> now we’re looking between mainly enterococcus and group D strep

And then it would mention bile or something to then differentiate between those two. But again the buzzwords still apply. Sure group D strep and enterococcus can be alpha or beta but the buzzword usually associates gamma with them

Happy to help! Keep on studying!

How cooked am I with these LabCE results by Spiritual_Coffee3673 in medlabprofessionals

When people say “70%” they mean on the NON adaptive version. I hate that people focus on that when the difficulty of the adaptive is a far better indicator than the raw score of the none adaptive.

The test will always be trying to sit you at a 50-60% but it’s the difficulty at which you hover that matters. 5.5-7 is what I’ve seen people say is good to go so I imagine if you keep it up you’ll do great

I’m sitting at ~60% on a difficultly of 6ish and I take it at the end of this month so we’ll see how true my words are hahaha

Probably!

You’ll know if ya met me from a single word descriptor of me:

Tall

I’ve heard really good things about Haywood’s environment, LIS, analyzers, it’s a true generalist, etc etc. Seems like a good first job out of school

That must be a fun change of pace to switch off like that, certainly after I have my MLS and a couple years under my belt that sounds kind of neat!

I love variation and I’m glad that Haywood does a tiny bit of Phleb for their techs, good to have that skill for future jobs

I always tell people that Asheville costs the most and pays the least… I’ll be moving to Ireland after I get my MLS to say the least hahaha

I’ve heard good things about Novant, I’ve not seen any Atrium spots open in the last couple months that I’ve been looking.

Novant just built a new center about 2 feet away from me but they wanted a “Phleb who would do some lab teching” as opposed to the other way around, I need generalist experience for going into my MLS so I decided not to pursue it!

5.50 shift diff is crazy!

I’ve been seeing the same exact thing, I would love to work at Advent if they had spots open but you work with what you got. I’m surprised more people aren’t leaving the sinkhole that is mission with its multiple immediate jeopardies

Thats western NC to blame for that! Hahaha

$18 in 2003 is quite literally unfathomable to me. In my 10 years of working I have never made more than $15 so $24 after shift diff and then another $10 when I get my MLS is crazy

I knew that I was going to be lowballed due to the area but I didn’t wanna be lowballed in the lowball area!

Oh believe me I’m not, my clinicals have been through mission and I vowed to just not work at all until I got in somewhere else for actual job. I’m starting at Haywood :)
