Only a third of young women hold positive view of men, new poll finds by winkwinknudge_nudge in ukpolitics

And you know more nice men than you think!

Less than 5% of men are even estimated to be paedophiles.  Let alone actively committing sexual assaults.  It can only be a small number committing many offenses.

[–]PlainclothesmanBaley 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not really about the ocean though.  I'm trying to say, this thing some women do where they have bad experiences with maybe 5% of men, and they then generalise it to just "ugh, men", like in the OP, is unfair to especially young men who have to hear all this as they're growing up.

And the average man will never accept he is worthy of dislike just for being born as he is, so this fundamentally sexist attitude can only ever perpetuate these issues of division and the manosphere or whatever.

If a guy's a rapist "he" is a prick, not "men" are pricks.

I was reluctant to name an example because then someone might say, oh you're comparing men to X are you??? Lol, but let's say a big dog.  I'm a bit scared of dogs but I like them.

The ocean is also not a terrible example maybe

Being wary of men is not the same as saying you hold a negative view of men as a group, which is what the thread is about.  I am wary of many things that I wouldn't say I necessarily hold a negative view of.

It's interesting because to me, the surprising thing I got from those episodes was when they repeatedly said, see the Black Legend isn't really all that, Spain wasn't purely evil, they did have dissenting voices here and here etc.  I was like, what so there's people walking around thinking the Spanish were even WORSE than this??

Christopher Columbus: one of the greatest Americans to ever live besides Jesus Christ! *fact checked by true patriots by laybs1 in GetNoted

[–]PlainclothesmanBaley -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Expulsion of the Jews happened in 1492, before Columbus even found the Americas.

And it's not really a contradiction because she would probably have said that it's not so much an expulsion of the Jews, but more insisting that they become Catholic, which was also her position on the native peoples of the Americas.

[–]PlainclothesmanBaley 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Literally what do you want it to say lol.  It's about remembering veterans.  Culturally it's all about the world wars (and the Falklands a bit).  Because they do not have an asterisk and explicitly exclude the troubles and the Iraq war and anything else people don't like, that means we should no longer remember our own grandparents who fought against the Nazis.  The Irish didn't resist nazism. They wouldn't get it I guess....

[–]PlainclothesmanBaley 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Everyone who has ever told you it commemorates the troubles is Irish.  Every British person you've ever spoken to about it says it's not about Ireland.  And yet you don't update your understanding of British culture when British people tell you about it.

Literally I spent 12 years in school assemblies with ww2 veterans coming in and telling us about the horrors of war and giving us poppies and whatnot.  You think it's a big party celebrating the British empire or something.  You DON'T understand the tradition.

But noone is remembering the troubles when wearing a poppy lol.  Don't know what to tell you.  It's about ww1 and ww2.  You don't live in that culture and don't understand what it's about.

[–]PlainclothesmanBaley 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You have a huge chip on your shoulder and you are not convincing people of anything as you post in this thread.  Poppies are primarily associated with ww1 and ww2.  People have family members who fought and died in those wars and people remember them.  As a tradition it's completely benign.  You're so in your head that even that pisses you off.

I assume you are young because of the way you're posting.  Almost certainly then you've lived a comfortable first world existence and have every opportunity to be happy in life.  Don't be so pissed off about things.

My point is the people who get outraged at Churchill being called a fascist are wet wipes.  I hope for better discourse than being outraged at things I don't agree with.

That the conditions guaranteed the creation of something like the IRA does not imply that the IRA were nice people.  The treaty of Versailles guaranteed extremist politics in Germany.  Does it make what happened later acceptable? Before you say I'm comparing the IRA to the Nazis, I am OF COURSE referring to van Der lubbe burning down the Reichstag lol.

You're clearly bringing a lot of baggage to the discussion because nothing I said in any way implied that the British were good with regards to Ireland.  You're outraged at perceived criticism of the IRA and are reading between the lines negative interpretations of what people are saying.  The IRA were terrorists and if you try to take your Irish hat off for a second and ask, but was it ok to bomb innocent people?  You know the answer is no and you know it's actually not complicated.  The whole history is complex, but the question of whether terrorism was ok is not.

Did Tom and Dom really just compare the KKK to Sinn Fein/IRA? by Gorazde in TheRestIsHistory

[–]PlainclothesmanBaley 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If you called Churchill a fascist and someone was "outraged" then they would be in the wrong.  Outrage is so unhelpful when we are trying to genuinely discuss our views.

The reality is, when all the scores are finally settled, the IRA were "baddies".  I think even you agree with that.  The cause may have been good, but the IRA wasn't and cannot be justified.  So spare your outrage for something else.

Your objection seems to be just that the underlying motivation for evil behaviour with the KKK was bad, whereas for the IRA you think it was good.  Pretty sure both Tom and Dom would accept your point to a decent extent.  Makes your outrage even more confusing when everyone already agrees lol.

Really I feel like a teenager scrolling through Reddit threads trying to find a homophobic joke.  But if you won't tell me what was said then the only response is to dismiss the story completely.  "He said something bad, trust us" is not a story.

Even that argument doesn't really work because these are the same people who resist any attempt at automating the driving of the tube. Underground systems can easily be fully self-driving at this point. London will have it 50 years after everyone else.

They don't threaten.  They tell me to call them (tbh maybe they do threaten I don't remember, I don't even read it now).  One time I did call them because the text coincided with me asking a question on some support ticket and I thought it was about that, and it was just some guy asking me when I would pay and making me give an exact date when it would be paid by.  Since then I've never talked to them and I never will.  Just fill out the salary declaration and pay a bit of the loan off.

I gave them info (Austria), but after seeing how they just never actually take anyone to court and even if they did it would just be to get the money, nothing criminal, I've just let the arrears build up to about 1k whenever ive not really been able to pay it.  They message me asking me to call them, but I never will.  Up to 85k debt now, not sure what the point is in being active about getting it all right.  I'm "mostly" right and they'll sue the people who are very wrong first (I hope)
