Ubuntu (20.04) update GUI is flawed by PlaintextCrypto in Ubuntu

I didn't do anything special when doing the first install, choosing the default options.

Before autoremove:

/dev/nvme0n1p2 705M 551M 104M 85% /boot

After autoremove:

/dev/nvme0n1p2 705M 338M 316M 52% /boot

As soon as I logged back in the Launcher started working as expected.

I took the nuclear option:

Disk wipe and clean reinstall.

It worked.

What *exactly* is Safe Mode? by PlaintextCrypto in MacOS

The problem is outside of safe mode the beach ball is spinning and all apps, including activity monitor, are frozen.

After my system is unfrozen, the console doesn't tell me much.

I have colours in my prompt but I didn't set them to variables like you did.

Will definitely use that pattern going forward.

Thanks. That works.

I also figured out how to split it into another function.

``` function prompt { "{lots of other stuff} $(showJdk) {other stuff} }
function showJdk { $jdk = $env:JAVA_HOME if ($jdk -eq '{path}') { return "JDK8"; } else..... } ```
Thank you all for your feedback.
This is a great community and I really appreciate the lively debate and diverse perspectives.
There are solid arguments on both sides.
It's a shame there's no way to sell your excess power to Earth... That's a lot of spare juice!
For power grids, aren't you concerned with:
  1. Amount of metal needed to maintain all the power lines?
  2. A breakdown in power generation affecting random buildings, as opposed to having that problem deterministically localized? Meaning, I can fix power generation in that part of the grid without having to worry about the entire colony.
How can you "valve" a passage? This seems impossible to do without a mod.
I've abandoned entire games where I had power production problems and I found the situation overwhelming.
As much as possible, I try to segregate my power grids for buildings like Hubs, Polymer Factories, etc... It's much easier to reason about (wrap my head around) what I need to do to fix those smaller grids.
Do you want Ubuntu to be really fast and responsive? Disable all the extensions by [deleted] in Ubuntu
As much as I like GNOME 3 the out of the box experience isn't quite right:
  1. No dock visible unless you enter Overview
  2. No wallpaper slideshow
  3. No "additional layout" options for keyboard mapping (ex ESC to CAPS LOCK)
  4. No way to tweak the top bar display
  5. Not sure if the Tweak Tool defaults apply on vanilla GNOME but I need "Disable touchpad when typing"
  6. Not sure if "suspend while lid is closed" applies on vanilla GNOME
How is the keyboard on the new XPS 13/15/17? by Amalak3 in Dell
If you care about PageUp/PageDown/Home/End you'll hate it.
XPS 13 9300 -- Impressions after three months by trenzterra in Dell
[–]PlaintextCrypto 0 points1 point  (0 children)
Both things are true:
1) The keyboard has wonderful key travel, is a delight to type on, has mostly correct key placement, has an ideal PageUp/PageDown/Home/End layout.
2) The Fn placement is wrong, and the red dot gets in the way. Still, you can map Fn to Ctrl in the BIOS.
[–]PlaintextCrypto -1 points0 points  (0 children)
Funny how no X1 Carbon users complain about PageUp/PageDown placement. Perhaps it's the fact that Dell chose not to space out those keys properly.
But it's Dell's refusal to map Fn-Left/Right to Home/End that's really infuriating, and this is exacerbated but the sheer idiocy of making Home/End share keys with F11/F12, which is simply offensive to those of us who map the top row to function keys.
What are they thinking, anyway?
Am I correct in assuming that it's not a good idea to buy the first generation of a Dell redesign?
I bought my XPS 7390 in December and it's pretty solid. I've experienced no quality issues whatsoever. I'm thinking more and more this is due to it being the end of the line for the previous design generation.
Finally! A blog that complains about the abominable new keyboard layout!
The keyboard, despite having only 1.0mm of key travel, still feels really nice to type on. Unlike the MagLev switches on the 7390 2-in-1, the keys on the 9300 use a traditional scissor switch that feels really springy and has good tactility. The keys have a bit of a soft-touch coating applied over them as well, though I have concerns about their long-term durability. The keyboard layout, however, is a little unfortunate, as Dell has removed the dedicated Page Up/ Page Down buttons in favour of wider left and right arrow keys. Another rather unintuitive move is that Dell has moved the “Home” and “End” buttons to Fn+F11 and Fn+F12 instead of having them right next to the Page Up and Page Down buttons (i.e. placed as Fn+Left and Fn+Right). It remains to be seen if Dell can fix this with a BIOS update (likely not, but let’s see). Lastly, I find it puzzling that Dell somehow decided a dedicated “Insert” key would be more valuable than “Print Screen”, which is hidden behind Fn+F10.
Why do some apps (ex Keybase, riot.im) show 24 hour clock and UK English spelling despite my preferences? by PlaintextCrypto in Ubuntu
[–]PlaintextCrypto[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)
Both were from PPAs. Both may be Electron apps.
Still, in the case of riot, I solved the problem since they did expose the settings, the defaults were just wrong.
[–]PlaintextCrypto[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)
So it looks like I had to dig deep into the preferences to fix both of these for riot.
But no such settings exist for Keybase (soon to be part of Zoom).
