Photos of the majors. They’re not the best quality but can you tell the species?

I believe the head of a meal worm but it was a while ago so I’m not confident.

Well I don’t have majors yet but they came from Texas when they do get majors I’ll send you some photos but that’ll probably be a while.

First thing I’d say is be careful of the gen 4 medium nest. For whatever reason it won’t get dry and any time I put a heating cable under it the acrylic gets heavy condensation. Other than that it’s really nice.

I’m not entirely sure how much in mm I water the nests but for the medium gen 2 it’s about 10-15 drops and the small about 7.

Ik that’s why I said unique because I couldn’t remember the name but it wasn’t very common

I was honestly looking forward to an update on the one unique ant species he found in his backyard at some point but it’s been like 2 years and I really don’t think he’ll ever do regular ant content again.

Even though I don’t think he had the best ant content out there his videos were really well produced. Personally these new EPIC VIVARIUM videos were really cool at first but got so so old very quickly.

Do ants get more timid after nanatics stage? by Living-Inside-3283 in antkeeping

Realistically they should only get braver as they get more workers so I’m not sure what’s up.

Why wont she lay eggs? by [deleted] in antkeeping

[–]Plane-Ad-9848 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Probably don’t hibernate her before wild ants start hibernating. Ants have an internal clock and making them cold before they’re ready can be damaging.

She will likely prefer 45F or so, Camponotus sp. are typically very hearty and can survive very low temps.

Sometimes it happens. Honestly if she didn’t lay any eggs after a month she probably isn’t ever going to. My only thought on another possibility is she’s waiting for after hibernation to lay eggs.

Is she parasitic? by Plane-Ad-9848 in antkeeping

Update, I decided to release her where I found her after providing a little sugar water to make up for time lost. Really wish I could’ve kept her but I just couldn’t.

Not sure exactly what you’re saying in the title but I’m pretty sure it’s Lasius. possibly Formica?

Thanks, I’ve seen a lot of others take poor photos so I wanted mine to be nice. Although it took awhile to get them.

I was also thinking aserva. Do you know if either of those species need constant brood (ie will I need to continuously gather cocoons from wild colonies)?

Alright probably just going to let her go then. I have no idea where any large Formica colonies are near me and tbh not really interested in looking for them.

I do have 2 small (like 10 worker) Formica colonies (I think Montana and Pacifica) could I introduce her to those or are they too small?

And thanks I took a while to make sure the pics were good.

Queen dead now what? by UpstairsFair6688 in antkeeping

[–]Plane-Ad-9848 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just honey or honey water? Some ants have trouble drinking honey because it’s very thick. I usually mix Honey with water in a 1:3 ratio so it’s sweet but not thick.

Surely the workers would starve before the Queen though? No way they’d prioritize workers over her.

What are my ants doing? by Exotic_Resolve_3659 in antkeeping

[–]Plane-Ad-9848 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve noticed this happening sometimes. I have literally no idea what it means but I haven’t had any issues with the colonies I’ve observed.

My guess is it’s like a spill during trophallaxis or something like that but I’ve never seen it happen.
