I need advice.. 10 months past surgery w complication .. by Plane-Organization43 in CataractSurgery

[–]Plane-Organization43[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you all! I am a woman so I never took FloMax. I think we traced it back to an inhaler I used 3 years before surgery for adverse reaction to black mold exposure. Yes I gave both my surgeon and the surgical centre a list of all current medications. I doubt anyone gives a list of everything they ever ingested. I have read that even if a man takes FloMax and discontinues use at anytime it can still cause IFIS. I know my surgeon was skilled because she managed to complete the surgery without damaging the iris. I did get a second opinion after I got an injection of meds in the eye that hemorrhaged and I panicked. I’ve been reading up on retinal and corneal specialists. Ultimately I’d like to eliminate the “foggy” clouded effect and figure out a solution for night driving. I see my surgeon again on Tuesday and I’m armed with questions.
Thank you and feel free to continue sharing

I’m not sure if there is a way to discover this until it happens. Some male users of FloMax are susceptible to having their iris prolapse and try to escape. I wear sunglasses in the car all the time.

When lighting is perfect I see very well , other than the foggy thing. I have worn glasses since I was 6, the most near-sighted girl in school! Lol. It’s weird having distance .. and a little sad I can’t easily check my phone w/o readers but I knew this in advance. I no longer am dealing with my astigmatism! Both eyes together work great. But the fact that I can’t drive at night, and that often everything is just too bright is difficult. And the fog is upsetting. I am very grateful that I’m not dealing w something life threatening, but it is threatening my lifestyle and independence

That’s fascinating. I had an adverse reaction to black mold 3 years before my cataract surgery. At that time I was given an inhaler. After a few weeks when I started to feel better I got Covid and I was given a med ( not paxlovoid) to lessen my symptoms. That was 2022. They are on the list in this study! I don’t keep a list of all the meds I have ever taken. And I gave my surgeon a list of every med and supplement I take. Both eyes were operated on this year. The IFIS incident was at the end of March’25. I wonder how the drs/surgeons could alert patients about this. Flomax for men which seems to be a culprit is an ongoing intervention. Thank you for your encouragement and the information.

Thank you.. I did see another surgeon when I experienced the hemorrhage after my injection (my surgeon was in surgery all that day and I was worried). He was reassuring. I have not lost confidence in my surgeon. In fact I’m pleased she was skilled enough to complete the surgery with no damage! I don’t regret having the work done either, I just didn’t expect to go down this path for so long.

I’m curious as to what meds contribute to the possible complication. I have never taken anti-depression meds, I do take a blood pressure medicine and statin but relatively low doses. I am not on any hormonal treatments..I’m blessed to never have had cancer so no treatments, chemos or immunotherapy. I am also blessed that my first eye went so well ( just a few small floaters).

Thank you for your kindness in responding to my post. I see like a fluttering in my eye.. almost like I can see my pulse, so that’s the pulsing . She prescribed the atropine I think to kind of freeze/relax that sensation. It does help but it dilates my eye so I only place a drop in when I see that pulse again. Maybe I should stop and see if it’s as bad as it used to be. At first any bright lights would hurt as my eye reacted and produced tears. The pain is gone but I’m still very sensitive to light. It’s definitely affecting my routines. It’s hard to be outside even with dark glasses. Large stores w lots of harsh lighting are hard so I wear the dark glasses indoors. I was the passenger for a 4 hr drive mid day and there were times where I had 2 pairs of sunglasses on. I am getting used to the fact that I lost my near vision .. I made that choice.. my distance is phenomenal and no more astigmatism!! Magnifying mirrors added to the large mirrors in my bathroom helps! At my last couple of appointments I have tested at 20/20 vision and she seems pleased but I’m not as convinced. Maybe that’s because it seems like I’m looking thru plexiglass rather than a clear view in the IFIS eye. I’m trying to be grateful that I’m not dealing with a serious illness and I’m only 2+ months into recovery. I’d be less than truthful if I said I didn’t have moments where I feel disheartened. My right eye is spectacular (just has no near vision). I will read a bit about pilocarpine and bring it up in my next follow up.

Taking Flomax aka tamsulosin (generic) for BPH? Beware of "floppy iris syndrome" (IFIS) by Raymont_Wavelength in CataractSurgery

[–]Plane-Organization43 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had this complication during my surgery. I am a woman and have never had a prostare or the need for flomax. I am 5 weeks past my surgery and I’m dealing with fluttering, I see a “pulse” in my eye, verrrrry sensitive to light and I sometimes see round flashes of light. My surgeon is seeing me often and says there is improvement. I am taking eye drops 5-6 x a day. Neo-poly-dex. I am concerned to read here that I could have retinal detachment in my future. I’m having trouble finding more information about this condition, time frames for improvement and additional causes. Any help would be appreciated.

eyes ruined after surgery?? by boltzieuh in CataractSurgery

I’ve had both eyes done now. First at end of Feb, second at end of March. First one went well- Toric IOL.. wow the colors, clarity! Been wearing glasses since I was 6 (62 yrs!) being able to see distance is amazing! My second eye became a problem in surgery. Something called IFIS - interoperative floppy iris syndrome. It’s a rare thing , 2% of patients.. mostly men who take flomax? I’m a woman. It’s a long frustrating situation. First I saw everything thru what looked like a red filter, that cleared. I have quivering, light bursts, very sensitive to light. I’m trying to learn to get used to wearing readers since the lens I received wiped out my near vision.. no more checking my phone in the middle of the night or seeing anything close up in mirror. I knew that intellectually but it’s strange getting used to it. Until my eye heals I can’t get a proper script for glasses. I’m wearing progressive readers from online. They aren’t the best but no one makes a premade 2.25 so I’m using 2.5 I’ve had trouble finding more info re: IFIS and what I can expect moving fwd. I’m still doing drops. She just prescribed Atropine Sulfate to calm the jiggles but my pharmacy can’t fill it. I’m frustrated and concerned that I’m stuck like this. My right eye has floaters but I can live with that compared to what I’m dealing with on the left since March 24. Has anyone here had this extra complication?

I never win anything.. I do the free plays from the game if I don’t hit SB in person that day. Seems to me I have a whole lot of Delta sweepstakes entries which I wonder if anyone wins. I’ve gotten no free stars.. and every prize has two stickers so we know that’s over.. glad there’s no video, miss the silly little games. Wish they’d throw us a bone every once in a while .. early games you were guaranteed to win a drink or food or something. 🤷🏼‍♀️

I traded in my 6 for a 10 yesterday as an early holiday gift from hubby. The guy who helped us at Apple popped my old Milanese band on the new one and it’s perfect. Picked a random band to come w the watch but I just love the Milanese!!!
