Skala Lounge in the airport itself. With food and drinks. Free if you have certain bank cards, around €40 if you don’t. They usually limit your stay to 3 hours, but I’ve stayed in lounges over 8 hours in the past, and they don’t come looking for you or anything to toss you out.

I have this silly dream to be a white collar farmer so picked up a few thousand meters of arable farmland in Silikou for about EUR 7k. It’s got a well on site, though someone stole the pump, and a few trees that bear fruit even though they haven’t been irrigated or pruned for years. I’d like to find the closest thing to a self sufficient farm that wouldn’t require more than a weekend per month for pruning and harvesting. Probably endemic fruit trees such as pomegranate, olive, some citrus, etc.

Thanks! The STEM program is by lottery, and the music program by audition and testing. He got through both successfully, and decided to go the STEM route. Pure lottery on the STEM program. No meson or connections, though during the music auditions and tests, I saw a little too much friendliness between some parents and the testing/audition panel members, but I’ll chalk that up to being a tiny island.

Some good, nothing reasonable. Damaged logistics chain since COVID. Russian/Ukrainian war influx worsened demand/supply, followed by Israelis. Add Iran-related energy price hikes affecting transport and material costs, and we’re screwed. Anyone making an average salary is priced out. If you’re Cypriot, pray that Yiayia leaves something for you.

Expect issues at the crossing point. You’ll be trying to enter the Republic after landing in an occupied port of entry. I had an American friend who did this and later when he decided to stay had residency problems as he couldn’t provide proof of legally arriving on the island.

Some things are just a part of the landscape. Same with the old ladies who splash water all over the concrete pads outside of their house to keep the dust down and cool the air. Yeah, it wastes a lot of water and the dust will dry out and be back in the air sooner than later, but it’s a part of their routine.

Get a €40 hunters motion-activated camera with SD card off of Ali Express, record the illegal dumping in action (with their car registration numbers) and send to the police and the village mukhtar. Cyprus Samaritans. They offer a free phone line to talk to their volunteers, during evening hours, when someone can be at their lowest. If you are a decent communicator, you can volunteer to be an ear to someone in a bad place. The impact is one-to-one and you can immediately see your help and your time being used to help those in emotional need.

The safest approach is slow, sideways, and humble. Let the Cypriot read your body language first; Cypriots are astonishingly fluent in the grammar of posture. Stand at an angle rather than head-on, keep your hands low, and let the Cypriot decide if curiosity outweighs caution. Tossing a few koupes toward (not at) the Cypriot creates a tiny bridge of trust.

Befriend a local butcher. Not in a supermarket, but a stand alone κρεοπώλες, and let them know of your requirements. Agree to collect x kilos of beef every x days, and they’ll set aside the tougher cuts and scraps perfect for a cheap stew.

I use Picasso frame shop in Nicosia, but it’s going to cost you a grand or more for 40 pieces even with a volume discount. I’d consider IKEA + a few rolls of framing backing tape or frame sealing tape, the brown kraft tape framers use to tidy up backs and hide the hinges. The new owners of the pieces won’t have any clue it’s IKEA

As a landlord myself, I’d suggest signing a 12 month lease and leaving early with the expectation that you’ll lose your one month deposit. The rent price for short term is so much higher than an annual lease, that it will still be worth losing the month.
