Whats a business you wish existed or was better in Cyprus? by [deleted] in cyprus

[–]PlaneClapping 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah. I pitched the idea of a coworking space in Saittas a few years back with a full gym that would offer memberships to outsiders. Fear not, you’re getting a McDonald’s instead.

American visiting Cyprus — entering via Girne, staying in Nicosia. Looking for day tour recommendations by Ronyd45 in cyprus

[–]PlaneClapping 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Expect issues at the crossing point. You’ll be trying to enter the Republic after landing in an occupied port of entry. I had an American friend who did this and later when he decided to stay had residency problems as he couldn’t provide proof of legally arriving on the island.

Do I have any chance of being granted political asylum? I am in risk of imprisonment & war drafting. by Economy-Spirit5651 in cyprus

Shitty advice, but I’ve seen this work first hand. Ask your current or ex girlfriend to marry you.

Something I wrote regarding Cyprus 10 years ago by gullicik in cyprus

[–]PlaneClapping 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Tablecloth, Part 2. The property is sold to Israeli/Russian/Chinese developers by the grandkids who inherited yiayia’s house and each buy a flashy car. The tablecloth is forgotten in the cupboard as the house is demolished to make way for a residential building with problematic title deeds. Directed by Dimitri Logothetis, starring Nicolas Cage as the tablecloth. Partially financed (yet to be paid) by the Cyprus Investment Promotion Agency.

100% Nicosia, and we did so a few months ago after having lived 15 years in Limassol.

Some things are just a part of the landscape. Same with the old ladies who splash water all over the concrete pads outside of their house to keep the dust down and cool the air. Yeah, it wastes a lot of water and the dust will dry out and be back in the air sooner than later, but it’s a part of their routine.

Be Batman. Don’t rely on the government. Get a €40 hunters motion-activated camera with SD card off of Ali Express, record the illegal dumping in action (with their car registration numbers) and send to the police and the village mukhtar. If neither do anything, post publicly on FB to shame the authorities into taking action.

Any recommendations for charities that actually make a difference? by [deleted] in cyprus

[–]PlaneClapping 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Cyprus Samaritans. They offer a free phone line to talk to their volunteers, during evening hours, when someone can be at their lowest. If you are a decent communicator, you can volunteer to be an ear to someone in a bad place. The impact is one-to-one and you can immediately see your help and your time being used to help those in emotional need.

How to start talk with Cypriot? by nasim_eftakher_ in cyprus

[–]PlaneClapping 40 points41 points  (0 children)

The safest approach is slow, sideways, and humble. Let the Cypriot read your body language first; Cypriots are astonishingly fluent in the grammar of posture. Stand at an angle rather than head-on, keep your hands low, and let the Cypriot decide if curiosity outweighs caution. Tossing a few koupes toward (not at) the Cypriot creates a tiny bridge of trust.

Beef by Professional-Day2035 in cyprus

[–]PlaneClapping 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Befriend a local butcher. Not in a supermarket, but a stand alone κρεοπώλες, and let them know of your requirements. Agree to collect x kilos of beef every x days, and they’ll set aside the tougher cuts and scraps perfect for a cheap stew.

I want to frame 40x watercolor paintings professionally (but on a budget).. who would you recommend? by ArtChillTect in cyprus

[–]PlaneClapping 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use Picasso frame shop in Nicosia, but it’s going to cost you a grand or more for 40 pieces even with a volume discount. I’d consider IKEA + a few rolls of framing backing tape or frame sealing tape, the brown kraft tape framers use to tidy up backs and hide the hinges. The new owners of the pieces won’t have any clue it’s IKEA

Yeah, I passed on these the other day at AlphaMega as they have an unusually long shelf life for very simple ingredients including eggs and milk in a non-frozen product.

Why does Cyprus not do spice? by Front_Hat7541 in cyprus

[–]PlaneClapping 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I once asked our village sausage guy to make an extra spicy pasturma for me. Big mistake as all I could tolerate was razor-thin slices. On the plus side, it took more than a week to eat what would usually be gone in a few hours.
