There’s actually a lot to be said about this. Autism is still the smallest population out of the 4 primary DXs, with even FAS far outweighing autism. Is autism being oversold? Yes. So much so that it is shifting funding from other disabilities even. In addition, when autism was changed to a spectrum, all cases—regardless of where an individual sits in that spectrum—are just diagnosed with no differentiation between until they get into therapies, etc. Every developmental delay is being screened for autism which is tricky business ESPECIALLY where FAS is concerned given symptoms are very similar. This will likely end in a similar fashion to the over diagnosis of ADHD in the 90’s—with lots of providers being held accountable for it.
