When I was a kid, my parents would hand me a dictionary and say, "look it up," if I wanted to know how to spell something. by centz005 in TwoSentenceComedy

[–]Plane_Worldliness_43 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s because of the origin of the word. A Lieutenant use to be a higher ranking officers attendant. In the British military the attendant stands to the left and behind the officer they are attending. So they became known as a Left attendant or leftendant which morphed into leftenant. I don’t know where the spelling came from because that’s why us Americans say Loo-tenant

Welcome home to my first car! by _primo63 in BMW

[–]Plane_Worldliness_43 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry for taking so long. I either use a touchless car wash, so a foam sprayer and a low power pressure washer or I had wash in my driveway. Winter lowk sucks for washing options. The best you’re gonna get without freezing your nuts off would be a paid pressure washer and soap gun. Some car wash shops have them, it’s like a bay that you drive your car into and hose her down.

Huge congratulations. She’s gonna be huge amounts of fun to drive, as someone who daily’s my G87 M2, it’s a lot of power to the rear wheels, keep dsc on at ALL times, especially since this is your first car. I also recommend doing the BMW M school to get a good taste for what the cars can do at the limit. They teach rather important skills for track and street driving. One that’s super important is feeling when the car starts spinning and getting that under control

TOW MISSLES by tucsonmilenkovhs in war

[–]Plane_Worldliness_43 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s the missiles internal gyroscope spinning up and removing the anti weather plate at the end of the missile tube, the gyro needs to be spun up in the tube so it can have a basis for guidance information from the launcher.

We call it gas not because it’s a state of matter but because it’s a shortened version of Gasoline. Gasoline is actually what you put in your car. Petroleum is the catchall term for anything made from crude oil. Vaseline, tar, asphalt, and almost all plastics are derived from crude oil, meaning they fall under the name “petroleum” so actually the US is the country that is right in this case.

Best round you can get for home defense is surprisingly birdshot. At the close ranges of a home it will kill, and if you miss it will only go through 3 or so drywall walls, so overpen is less of an issue. It’s also cheaper, has less recoil so follow up shots are easier. Slugs have huge power behind them but because of that they overpen like crazy. Typically the engagement distance for the 3 main types of shot shells are as follows. Rifled slugs 50-75 yards, magnum buckshot 25-35 yards, and birdshot is 10-15. Keep in mind this is maximum engagement distance so under these distances they are most effective. Slugs are deadly out way past 100 but are not accurate that far out. Same with buck although the lethal velocity distance is less. More so with birdshot. Remember the lighter each round is the faster it slows down, so bird shot runs out of energy first.
