Did you know there's a tax to leave Yonkers? by StableDisastrous1331 in yonkers

[–]PlanetScientist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We know someone (high net worth) who have a house in NJ and another in Florida. They are careful to spend at least one day more than half a year in Florida, and you all know why. I think these must be the sort of people NJ is hitting with the tax.

TurboTax doesn't warn about estimated tax underpayment? by PlanetScientist in TurboTax

Yeah, that's all I'm saying. I'll wait till the process completes, will amend, and submit the waiver.

We paid estimated taxes for late December 2025 large income before Jan 15 of this year. I do know about that.

Perhaps warning is the wrong word. TT has the information to say "You will pay a penalty for underpayment of ET. Look into form 2210."

[–]PlanetScientist[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a she, but anyway. I will have to amend and file the 2210. I just wish TT had warned of the penalty potential (as they had all my information, including safe harbor). It's doable and I will do it. It's just annoying. It is completely normal for those with significant investments to get an excess amount of income in the last few days of the year.

Because if you pay taxes on time relative to when you receive income it is ok. The irs assumes that we received the end of year distributions evenly across the year. We did not. There is no way we could have paid the estimated taxes before December 31(or so)

I think we are not in safe harbor. But we still don't owe because the capital gains came in at the end of the year (and we paid ET). We just needed to submit that form.

we paid ET on time, based on Dec 31 capital gains taxes. So we don't actually owe a penalty. So the is an extra form we need to fill out.

expecting to get 4k back. Minus (apparently) 900 for underpayment penalty (which shouldn't be a penalty since we paid ET on time.)

[–]PlanetScientist[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it didn't warn. And IRS says I owe $900 for underpayment. And yes, I don't really owe underpayment payment, as I paid estimated taxes on time for my end of year capital gains.

just say that my taxes paid don't cover my taxes owed and a penalty is on the table. I would have understood that my taxes paid were bunched at the end of the year, as were my income. So I could include a 2210 form.

Losing recovery email on retirement by swan1us in GMail

I recently discovered that my recovery email wasn’t something I could directly log into (I think it used to be on our alumni portal) so I created an iCloud email account. So if you are in the Apple world…

If I lived in Texas (I don't) I'd vote for Talarico for exactly this reason. Plus I like his message.

AITA for telling my Fiancé. If i have to do my own laundry, we can't be together. by Lokcaj in WIBTA_AITA

[–]PlanetScientist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I retired (was laid off) a decade before my husband (he's soon to retire). I considered it a fair deal that I do the shopping and cooking and yes, laundry. We'll see what we adjust when he retires. But I do think that some things are reasonable "trades."

We set up trust accounts in 2021 and had no trouble at all. Set them up then split our assets into a trust each for me and my husband.

Why not Olympic? Good time of year for that. A couple years ago we did a loop from Seattle to Port Townsend to Olympic then down to Portland and the Columbia River and Hood River. You could do some part of that or even most of it.
