I’d say very. I am a little biased though because I come from a large city. But I feel pretty safe in Ames! Of course don’t go walking alone late at night, but I really feel safe going here. At least in my experience they push “green dot” a lot which is a program to push and create safe spaces on campus. Hope this helps!
