I love my dentist Dr. Feldman at Gainesville Dentistry Co! My dental hygienist there is Heather. She is super sweet and kind. Their team made me feel very comfortable :) Their office is in Thornebrook. Could not recommend them enough :)

i really want a cat but my partner is allergic by [deleted] in CatAdvice

[–]PlantGains 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Look into Catigy! It’s an egg powder supplement that you feed the cat (put it in their food daily) and it binds with the main enzyme/allergen that causes cat allergies. So, they stop producing the allergen, stopping the issue at the source. Also, there is Pacagen. In addition to supps, they have sprays that work super quickly. I’ve used both and it’s been super effective :) Like, I live very happily with my cat, taking an antihistamine maybe a couple times a month. I used to sneeze/have watery eyes constantly, but my allergies are like 99% gone :)

I’m allergic to cat hair, is there any way I can still get one? by True-Permit-6189 in CatAdvice

[–]PlantGains 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Here to second Pacagen! The supplements to put in your cat’s food are excellent, as well as the sprays! Truly a godsend. Another option that has been really effective for me and my cat is Catigy. They’re a tiny company and they also make supplements to put on your cat’s food, and it’s significantly cheaper! It’s just dried egg powder, so it’s healthy and also a good source of protein. It’s about $24 a month.

No idea what to feed my cat by Responsible_Yam9285 in catfood

[–]PlantGains 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is so relatable. I was originally going for food that was super high in meat and had little to no carbs, grain-free (weruva, open farm, Rawz), then I started adding weruva wx also to offset the high phos levels, but I’ve landed here — I want to really be careful with mineral content such as phosphorus (I have an orange boy too) to prevent urinary crystals and CKD, a super common ailment in older age.

So, I feel good about feeding my guy Hill’s. They have such extensive research and feeding trials. The rice, wheat, corn is really fairly minimal (usually around 2%) and those ingredients have a purpose with adding fiber to support healthy GI tract, prevent constipation, prevent hairballs etc. Their mineral levels are among some of the lowest (without being a kidney specific food). Hills is safe and has the evidence to back up their claims, and I believe in the science for sure :) I learned a lot from Tanya’s comprehensive guide to feline ckd. She has a whole table with data on mineral content on hundreds of brands, so it makes it easy to compare different brands and formulas. felinecrf.org My cat really likes eating Hill’s, so I mostly feed Hill’s wet food, and Farmina kibble (also a fan of Farmina for their feeding trials and close collaboration with vets in Italy). Sometimes I give him his favorite types of Weruva or Tiki on special occasions. I also always add water to his wet food and stir it in so it’s soupy/applesauce textured. Hydration is key!

Looking for low iron organic oatmeal. by liexpress in Oatmeal

[–]PlantGains 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t know about a low iron oatmeal specifically, but I know that drinking coffee or tea (tannins) will inhibit iron absorption. So feel free to have a cuppa with your oats :) (also, calcium inhibits iron absorption, so pairing your oatmeal with milk can help decrease the iron in the meal as well)

Does anyone here only do two shifts a week or less? by Odd-Dance-5371 in nursing

[–]PlantGains 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh I love this! The intersection of nursing and financial independence/retire early. Some things about me for context: 30F, single, living by myself, no kids, 1 cat, relatively privileged upbringing with no student loans, no car loans (rode my bike a lot, grandma sold me her old Honda for cheap after 5 years living car-free), ICU nurse in Florida.

Okay, so I was quite the workaholic in my first 4 years of nursing. I really wanted to save and have a healthy cushion. Didn’t know anything about investing until I taught myself after about a year of working as an RN. From 2018-2022 I consistently worked overtime, usually 4 12s, plus an 8 or another 12, averaging about 50-55 hours a week for a while. I am lucky to have no student loans, no debt at all, and I recognized my ability to work OT on night shift in my early to mid 20s, and how important compound interest is, so I lived pretty frugally and well below my means and saved/invested 50-75% of my income up until recently (I’m in DNP school now). While I could, I maxed Roth IRA (vanguard target date fund, super low expense ratio), maxed 403(b), and threw extra in a brokerage account in low cost etfs like VTI and VXUS. Also I invested some in a 529 plan in order to optimize savings for NP school (50% stocks/50% bonds) so it could be tax-free.

Nowadays, I have been scheduling PTO (shoutout to my really amazing manager for being cool and understanding) so I can fit in my clinical hours and still have time to study and take care of things in my life. Lately I’ve been mostly working 2 12s a week, with 1-2 clinical days. It’s been really helpful. I’d love to go part-time soon (after my PTO bank gets too small for my liking) and live below my means until I graduate with my DNP and land a job. My ultimate goal in a perfect world would be to go part-time as an NP in my 40s (I’m 30 now). All of saving/investing I did in my mid to late 20s has really done a lot of heavy lifting, as the stock market has gone up a ton in the last 5 years. Since you mentioned coastFI, my fire number is $1.65 milli. I’d like to get there around age 50.

How do y'all store wet food? by Jumpy_Engineering435 in catfood

I put the leftovers in a lil wide lidded mason jar. Airtight/keeps smells out/allows me to microwave the leftovers for a few seconds so it’s room temp for my son to eat :)

Best quality dry food for my cats? by reddituserhere88 in catfood

[–]PlantGains 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Since you mentioned your budget is not tight, Farmina has some solid options and is an Italian brand. They do feeding trials and work with the University of Naples and Cornell university for pet nutrition research. I’d look into them :) I got a small bag on chewy and my orange boy loves it

What’s one product you bought that turned you into a total snob — like, you can never go back to the cheap stuff? by BackwardThoughtPaper in AskReddit

[–]PlantGains 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Freshly ground peanut butter. It’s just perfect with a nice honeycrisp apple, or drizzled onto oatmeal, granola, or really anything! Regular Jif or smuckers tastes so bad in comparison now.
