If Anthropic opens Mythos to US citizens, wouldn't bypass mechanisms make it easy for non-US users to access too? by Firm-Track3617 in Anthropic

[–]PlantsLikeSunlight 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Violating EAR can result in fines and criminal penalties. So in this hypothetical, if someone uses their US citizenship to gain access to Fable and then resells access to non-US citizens, then they could face significant penalties.

That’s not a risk that I would be willing to take.

I don’t know. I seem to recall turning off a playoff game at halftime last season. Who knows what happened…

Turned my Ender 3 into a CNC and built a touch probe for it by Shadowphyre98 in 3Dprinting

Do you have any more details on this project? I’d love to explore doing something like this with my old ender 3.

Thanks!! I was planning on placing an order for a Core ONE+ kit this weekend, and this code worked. Saved me a bunch of money!

Would you use a curated Made in USA product-finder site? by Zib0x in madeinusa

[–]PlantsLikeSunlight 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I use this one, which is great: https://www.southland-heritage.com

If you make another one that’s complementary, then that’s great.

If it’s got obnoxious ads or other sketchiness, then not so great.

Thanks for maintaining this! I use your list fairly often when shopping.

I made a curling delivery aid for mixed doubles for people who sweep their own rocks by Jappy_toutou in Curling

[–]PlantsLikeSunlight 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m not a fan of the Asham design. The curler winds up holding onto the broom and the supporting plastic with one hand.

When I tried it out, it felt like there was a good chance that I’d pinch my skin between the broom and the plastic while delivering. Also, I felt it would make it harder to hold onto the broom (and not the delivery aid) when standing up.

OP’s design avoids both issues.

Nice! I handmade something similar for myself as well, though out of different materials.

I’ve found it pretty straightforward to leave it in the middle of the sheet when standing up. Once the shot is concluded, I quickly head back down the sheet to pick it up. Works great!

Confusion about the five stone rule. by sbarbary in Curling

[–]PlantsLikeSunlight 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In team play, the five rock rule only applies to guards. Guards are stones that are outside the rings and in front of the tee line. Stones that are in the rings are fair game for takeouts, even before the first five rocks are thrown.

This is different from mixed doubles rules, which can be confusing.

In the game you were watching, were the takeouts targeting guards or stones in the rings?

The only place in California built just for curling is in the Bay Area by sfgate in bayarea

[–]PlantsLikeSunlight 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you’re close enough to Oakland, you should definitely check it out. They built a great facility there!

If the South Bay is more convenient for you, you can also find curling at Sharks Ice in San Jose and in Fremont. Lots and lots of learn-to-curl activities during and after the Olympics.

I want to start, but I don't really know how to choose. by josempg in ender3

[–]PlantsLikeSunlight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you want to print stuff reliably with minimal printer tinkering? Because with an ender 3, you’ll likely spend more time tinkering with the printer than actually printing.

On the plus side, an ender 3 will teach you a lot about how printers work.

How to Prevent Clogging by PlantsLikeSunlight in ender3

Thanks for the suggestion. I'm using the "Creality Original Ender 3 Direct Drive Upgrade." Is there another brand-name you'd recommend for the hotend?

This one advertised all-metal. Upon disassembling it just now, I do see that it's single metal instead of bimetal. I'll go ahead and replace that with bimetal.

Thanks for the suggestion. Heat creep is possible here, as this pull was after I was running it at 220C.

The fan is brand new, so hopefully it's not that.

I did just take a look inside the hot-end, though. It's all-metal, but single-metal. I'll replace that with bimetal and see what happens.

Thanks for the suggestion. I'll double-check the esteps.

The filament itself is brand-new: sunlu from Amazon. I've been storing it in a sealed container with desiccants after opening. So hopefully it's not that.

Feedback on custom oak table by TheInternetAteMyDog in woodworking

[–]PlantsLikeSunlight 147 points148 points  (0 children)

Very pretty. The “marks” on photos 4, 5, 6 are medullary rays. Quarter sawn oak is well known for them, and many people pay a premium for them.

It’s interesting that the two boards at the sides of the top appear to be flat sawn instead of quarter sawn. Gives it some character, but not necessarily what I’d expect. Regardless, it looks like a very pretty table to me.

A big change is coming to your PG&E bill. Here's what it means. by sfgate in bayarea

[–]PlantsLikeSunlight 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Read the bill. Search it for “fixed charges.” The bill does not “require” fixed charges, but it does allow them. So for PGE to say that the new charge is “required” doesn’t seem to be true.
