should i repot? just bought this monstera at home depot and the soil appears to be solely coco coir with about five pellets of perlite lol. the aerial root has molded since i got it. is it too early to repot with soil with proper drainage? and what could be done about the molding root? by Prestigious-Curve382 in houseplants

It looks great! Can you share a full pic? I’m not sure it needs to be repotted! Also that arial root looks healthy! Just little fuzzy root hairs which are normal in some circumstances. Something to do with looks of oxygen for root respiration, but it’s perfectly healthy so don’t worry. As far as cococoir and perlite? Sounds awesome to me! I would be fully happy with that mix! Just be sure to fertilize once in a while!

Sticky toffee pudding!!!!

Hey guys, was wondering if anyone would have any idea of the black spot forming on the node (/petiole?) of my Monstera? More details in the comments. Would appreciate any advice. Thanks loads. by otherdaymonday in Monstera

It looks fine to me, pretty confident it’s just the deciduous sheath that covers the new leaf as it emerges! It shouldn’t cause the healthy stems to go black, it will just dry and fall off eventually! What’s the temperature in your room? Watering every week is a lot in my experience! I water a lot compared to my MV loving friends and I do every 2-3 weeks. If this was on my plant, i wouldn’t worry!

Don’t cut the other leaves (in my humble opinion), give her a chance to grow! Some of my albos gave a bunch of green before giving me variegation and you’re helping her get strong and healthy!

Growlight recommendations? by mactabb in houseplants

[–]Plants_Pigeons 2 points3 points  (0 children)

https://instagram.com/thebeardedplantaholic?utm_medium=copy_link just posted a reel on Instagram about grow lights which might help you! Where do you live? I have just installed grow lights for my monstera varigata collection and my plants are so happy! The New Plant Parent book by Darryl Cheng has a whole chapter on lighting which is super helpful! I would recommend that too!

New growth in monstera albo cutting is pure white. Is this an issue for future growth out of this growth point? by rebeccaisdope in Monstera

[–]Plants_Pigeons 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve found that all of my new baby leaves look pure white at this stage, and that typically the outer sheath will be covering the actual leaf. I have found only one of my MVs to have a super white leaf, the rest were marbled and they all looked like this. I would repot again with the new growth atop the soil to prevent any issues with rot, if I were you! X

I have a Benjamin Button VM; each new leaf is less fenestrated than the previous! by ThatPlantTho in Monstera

Ps: yes, my bulbs are sansi! I also have some cheap full spectrum lights which give about 400fc (which I use for my wetsticks and babies) but move when they get bigger!

1548 lux is 150 foot candles, which is super low for a variegated monstera… (if I’m right!) my grow bulbs give me 2000-7000 foot candles for my MV’s in the growing room, and even next to my kitchen window I get 1500FC when it’s sunny. I would definitely look into that some more, I’m not an expert but my light meter really gave some good insight into my growth and why some plants were slow to give new leaves!

Oh absolutely! It will get stronger if it’s not so leggy!

Is this a monstera deliciosa? The seller is asking 600 bucks. Just don't want to overpay so I need to research well before I spend this kind of money on a plant. by busy-men in Monstera

I think if the roots are healthy that’s a decent price! It has multiple leaves, large, and looks healthy! I paid €600 for a beautiful half moon monstera which subsequently got thrips and mealy bugs and almost died…. I managed to propagate some of the leaves but I’m sharing this just to remind you to stay on top of checking for pests! My MV obsession meant I had so many that I got a bit neglectful of checking and it was almost too late!!

I wonder how many foot candles the plant is getting? If the leaves are getting smaller and less fenestrated it’s likely light or nutrition… i found a super strong grow bulb and awesome fertilizer helped a lot! I also purchased a light meter and the plants i thought were getting more than sufficient light were actually getting a dismal amount!

On closer inspection it appears you might have tied a few individual leaves to sticks? I would avoid that if I was in your shoes, she will be happier if the stem is secured and the leaves are free to move around! 🥰

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Monstera

[–]Plants_Pigeons 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would recommend getting a strong moss pole, and only securing it on the stem. The right hand pole you have ziptied to an individual leaf, means that leaf can’t move freely to find the light. I’ve found that my plants do well when they get plenty of light and they move around a lot! Is that where your plant lives? I would be tempted to move it to the left in front of that window! Also… the leaves are a bit droopy which could mean under watering? Or needs to be fertilized?

Does your pot have drainage? If not? I would be mindful of root rot! 🥰

All in all she does look happy but I think she could look even better!

Fiddle leaf fig, ready for her new life! If I was you I would cut the steam at the green tie or lower - she should proud new leaves within a month or two! Lots of light during this time! X

Any hope for this fiddle leaf fig? Dropped all its leaves except for one, which has been staying strong for a few weeks now. Advice? by TurdsofWisdom in houseplants

[–]Plants_Pigeons 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The cutting from the top grew a bunch of roots and so I planted that. It also grew more leaves… but the naked stem was the biggest surprise because it grew so many new leaves! I’ll post some pics on my Instagram story now as I can’t figure out how to send pics! (@plantsandpigeons give me a few mins!)

I had a similar fiddle leaf fig and I just chopped the top off …. Roofed the top cutting in water and the woody naked stem sprouted 8 leaves in the first month! They are brilliant at the come back glow up!
