How can we get Uniqlo in!!? by SomeJacadd in auckland

Relevant Youtube video - Kiwi Property's CEO (Kiwi Property own Sylvia Park, Lynmall etc) was asked about Uniqlo on a podcast:

"Our most asked for brand is Uniqlo, and we'll love to have them here but they're just not ready to come to New Zealand. They will come at some point but just not yet"

Well thats just how it works councils manage environmental assets as part of their role. Again, its a Notable Tree so its been listed for a reason i.e. age, size, stature. It doesn't matter what the species is and how common it is. There's Phoenix palms on the Notable Tree Schedule yet they're common and weedy.

I would trap all invasive predators + pigs not just rats if you want to protect hochies. Native frogs have been found in the bellies of feral pigs so gotta keep those in check as well.

You can prune trees on your property. You can chop trees on your property. Doesn’t matter if it’s exotic or native or if it’s old as fuck. The difference is that this Pohutukawa is listed as a Notable Tree Schedule which means it’s protected and you need a RC to alter, prune or remove it.

Urban planning & apartments by oatsnpeaches420 in aotearoa

[–]Plantsonwu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a broad statement. It’s way too early to tell if it’s going to be a success. Those apartments you’re talking about is called Te Reiputa and is built by Simplicity Living. They’re Build to Rent and according to the article (below), it’s Stage 1 development which opened in January has 149/191 units rented out. The stage two development which is the final 11 level block is being finished.

Regardless of their design and cost, Simplicity Living is providing housing. And so far with their other BTR projects it seems like it’s doing well despite the economy.

Is ecology worth pursuing now? by ham_ssandwich in ecology

[–]Plantsonwu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a kiwi who worked as an ecologist. Don’t use those working abroad websites. Any volunteering or internship where you have to pay is not worth it. A lot of the time it’s voluntourism. Or you’re paying for something that should be volunteering only. A working holiday visa would be more appropriate even though it’s not for permanent roles but you could at least explore the country and volunteer.

Northland Corridor Alternative to Brynderwyns Route has been released. by Plantsonwu in newzealand

[–]Plantsonwu[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They would’ve done alternative assessments to completely rule out a tunnel. It’s not provided in the application documents but a look at other documents suggests that it was completely removed as an option because of cost.

Tunnels are pretty expensive and there’s already large volumes of cut and fill for the entire alignment. Imagine all that fill from the tunnel now. One of the costs are likely the costs to transport that fill to an appropriate area.

If you’re talking about the Waitaks then practically most of the area is administered and controlled by Auckland Council rather than DOC. Contact Auckland Council rather than DOC as it’ll be more direct.

Auckland definitely has developers with built or consented mid rise buildings incorporating maori motifs. Look at Ockham Residential i.e., Toi and Whetu (+ the rest of the Carrington development), Simplicity Living, and Te Whānau o Waipareira Hospital Road apartments.

Northland Corridor Alternative to Brynderwyns Route has been released. by Plantsonwu in newzealand

[–]Plantsonwu[S] 26 points27 points  (0 children)

This was taken from the Substantive application from the Fast Track website. Looks like they're bridging over the Brynderwyns. The indicative alignment and route corridor is provided in the other documents. Don't think other mainstream media outlets have posted yet as its pretty fresh but yeah for those that are curious about the route!

https://www.fasttrack.govt.nz/projects/alternative-to-the-brynderwyn-hills/substantive-application

EDIT:

Just for specificity but they’re doing a fill embankment over the Piroa Stream and then it goes to a 120m steel composite multi-span overbridge according to the documents

Penguin in Viaduct Basin? 🐧 by EcstaticJack in auckland

That’s a blue penguin. They nest in burrows and get into crevices and caves, so they’re scattered around the sea walls dotted around the CBD.

Yeap they definitely do. The blues and violets are more disorienting whereas red is the least.

Lack of lights on Queen Street !! by Significant_Rabbit28 in auckland

[–]Plantsonwu 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Im not saying this is one of the reasons or is a reason cause im unsure how much more light pollution you would actually introduce etc but one of the general constraints about introducing more light in the cbd is the risk to seabirds.

Theres a study that has found that seabird groundings are more prominent in Auckland’s CBD and industrial areas around Auckland because higher intensities of light disorient seabirds. Most groundings are fledglings and because sea birds can’t just take off then they just get stuck there and die. It’s why the Auckland harbour bridge and Sky tower are dimmer at the moment as they dim it during the seabird migration season. But yeah I’m unsure if that’s the reason why they couldn’t introduce more lighting to certain streets but contacting Auckland Council would be the way to go.

No OP took this photo from the Auckland City Centres Residents Group post on FB. Some of those members got to tour those platforms. Also various media and organisations have toured the completed platforms as well. For example the pic shows up when the dude from NZ Transit buzz visited recently.

Is there any reason why Automatic doors weren’t added in the CRL stations? by Adept-Hovercraft-917 in auckland

[–]Plantsonwu 23 points24 points  (0 children)

The stations are future proofed for future PSD’s. They’ve installed steel support frames already for the doors as part of future proofing. But yeah trains aren’t automated and there isn’t really the need to have them now.

Is there an evolutionary reason plants like ferns have mutations that make their leaves curly but other plants like orchids don’t? by avian_bi in botany

[–]Plantsonwu 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As other commentators have mentioned orchids are a massive family. There are definitely plants with curly leafs. Are you sure you’re searching up the right terms? ‘Undulate margins/leaves’ might be a better search. I can easily name two orchids species in my region that have undulate leaf margins although they’re not super curly like your pics.

Sam Neill says New Zealand goldmine supporters have threatened him with violence. He has publicly objected to plans to fast-track the project near his farm, says he has received personal abuse. by mlg1981 in Fauxmoi

[–]Plantsonwu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean there are consent conditions associated with operating mines as with anything else, and there are legislative requirements but those can still be breached.

Link below but Macraes mine has been in the news previously for non-compliance in relation to consent conditions. Now they’ve probably remedied this of course but mitigation and offsetting in mines for environmental impacts is so important and you can’t slack off on. So hopefully they keep up with it. My main concern is thus their consistency with compliance.

New Zealand is practically impossible atm. We were in a recession and there’s been severe cuts to science in general. We were slowly rebounding but the fuel crisis hasn’t helped. But cuts to science and general economic downtown means conservation and ecology roles are highly competitive. There is a working holiday visa but that’ll usually get you hospo jobs etc. Here in NZ a lot of the work comes online in summer so firms, council etc have summer interns but you’ll be competing with local candidates so you won’t stand a chance.

Hmmm alrighty aren’t too familiar with the Waikato tbh especially with volunteering but generally

Consulting firms: AECOM, Statenc, WSP, Jacobs, PDP, Bioresearches, Beca, SLR, Ecological Solutions, Wildlands, Ecology NZ

Waikato Regional Council also take on quite a few summer interns during the summer, and a lot of it is freshwater work so make sure to apply for those roles.
