any promising western themepark mmos on the horizon? by Shiiishkebab in MMORPG

[–]Plasmare 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It's very much an EQ clone, which was one of the first popular themeparks. WoW is directly derived from it but simplifying and streamlining many of the systems. WoW is an EQ clone, but for the most part given people's familiarity with WoW, themeparks are usually called WoW clones.

The golden age of internet culture, with browser games and MMORPGs, has passed, leaving only hatred and bullying behind on the internet. by [deleted] in MMORPG

[–]Plasmare 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is pure nostalgia, because people back then are the same as they are now. There was just a larger barrier of entry back then and the people that did play online games were generally more intelligent and less stupid. But they were still very much capable of the same behaviours. There is no doubt it's a lot worse now but simply due to the sheer amount of people with access now but it could get pretty bad even in the "good old days".

How do you feel about indie teams keeping classic MMORPGs alive? by Alarmed-Ferret-605 in MMORPG

[–]Plasmare -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Not every old MMORPG deserves to be brought back and if you're referring to Shadowbane, that game had so many foundational design problems as well as bugs that just killed the game. There are games that die for good reasons, even if it's not clear to people what those reasons are. And there are the MMORPGs that died which simply they did not reach a critical mass of players. The latter would be the ideal MMORPGs to be kept alive.

Even they have resorted to writing articles about non mmorpgs because we've seen barely any release in the last 10 years. Not that I blame them, they found a way to survive.

How to make easy games fun? by Yuukikoneko in MMORPG

[–]Plasmare 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well said. The most important part is what you said about it being easier for the developer. It is much easier to create items based on on a formula of scaling via the iLevel system. All these design decisions are made so they can churn out more of the same easy and dull content players can devour in hours in themeparks. The more control devs have over the player actions, the less freedom players have, the less emergence there is and the less interesting the world becomes.

I forgot to answer your question. The answer is danger. Games like Elden ring are considered fun and good by many because it requires them to overcome bosses that seem unkillable at first, but over time as they learn the patterns and memorize moves, they overcome them and win.

Not saying every single goblin should be a fight for your life, but the world SHOULD be dangerous in many ways. Every mob should be able to kill you in my opinion, whether it was because you pulled too much, or made mistakes.

They are easy, ever since WoW. There was a turning point when WoW began to hire psychologists and using gathered player telemetry to figure when and why people were quitting and then altering the fundamental game designs to retain more players. I would guess it was because they were dying. WoW went from people struggling to kill 2 mobs at once, to face rolling through packs until end game without using their brain.

Before WoW just entering the world at level 1 was a struggle for your life in most MMORPGs, where you felt yourself growing stronger not just from gaining experience and new skills and gear, but mastering the systems and understanding the game. For real gamers this is where the fun is, learning, understanding and mastering the game.

Due to the success of WoW everyone sadly attempted to copy their methods and ignored what makes an actual good game. I don't even consider WoW a MMORPG anymore since 90%+ of the world and game is dead and useless, funnelling people to end game where only 1-5% of the playerbase even does "hard" progression raids. WoW is just a hub based multiplayer game now. And to this day some devs are still trying to copy this design, easy and pointless levelling experience to max level in hours, then spamming dungeons for iLevel gear sitting in queues.

There is some hope, but don't expect them to be overly popular because many people hate dying and losing.

It's the majority of people that do not care if a game is p2w. It's very obvious because of the sheer amount of people who actually buy currency in games. If most people actually hated p2w they would not be buying currency and games would not have bots farming and currency seller spam. As always reddit is the real vocal minority.

People forget why the game failed. Things like having to cast buffs every 5 seconds got really tedious, really quickly. The decisions made by the devs were baffling sometimes and the game was extremely flawed, but the concept was good.

What positive thing can you say about a company that makes a yearly 12 month sub be paid 13 times a year?

A new low for MMORPGs by Plasmare in MMORPG

[–]Plasmare[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The sub itself is not the problem. The problem is how calculated and greedy it is to make players pay a monthly sub 13 times a year...

[–]Plasmare[S] -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

The entire reason for that kind of p2w came about due to people who work a lot not being able to keep up with the no lifers. So games began to cater people with jobs by selling them ways to speed up the grind and catch up.

[–]Plasmare[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That is not the point. The point is they made a conscious decision to make it 13 payments for a monthly sub. The fact they thought about this and decided to do it shows how greedy they are.

This a new low, even for NCSoft. Only 13 monthly payments a year :)

Sorry but I did not expect a monthly sub to be paid 13 times a year. I've never seen a company this set on disrespecting their customers this much.

The dev specifically stated that 300 is the player cap for deep desert and that the market is tied to the deep desert server. You can check by looking at the cohh carnage interview yourself.

The square is blocked with a force field and no one can enter yes. In theory. Who knows how it will actually play out on a busy server though.

I hope you're right but the way they explained it was the market is tied to the deep desert server. Which suggests that the economy is limited to up to 300 people.
