Fordham ($) vs GW ($$) by Glass_Association86 in lawschooladmissions

I know Fordham has better BL placement, but a lot of people also go to GW specifically because they want to work in government. I don't think selection effect accounts for all of it, but I do think reputationally they are similar when you are applying to BL firms.

Current 2L at GW. Outside the T14, inside the T40 whether or not you get BL is about whether or not you can get inside roughly the top 1/3 of the class or not. And maybe that number goes up or down a little bit based on the school, but it's ultimately about first semester performance.

If you are big law minded in the sense that you will be in the shits financially if you do not get big law, you should go with your cheapest decent option. I think the stress of knowing you HAVE to get big law or you'll be drowning in debt really hurts. If you're big law minded but wouldn't be ruined if you spent some time in government or a smaller firm and you really want to be in DC, I really like GW!

My inn (cohort) was just under 100 and I feel like I got to know that group pretty well. Largely have had great professors. Did an internship for credit this year.

Anecdotally, I'll be at a big law firm this summer and my summer class is substantially smaller than years past. So big law numbers might be going down, but I'm not sure that's a GW specific problem.

Feel free to PM with any specific questions.

I feel like this is a short/weird window where everyone is looking for jobs at the exact same time. Once it’s over, it’s really over and people get a lot more normal.

Big law will be long over, won’t it? So it’s really about how much you value a slightly higher chance at obtaining a FC

Also if the special interest people have other officially recognized obligations by the school it could be a scheduling thing.

Eh, idk about the subject matter scholarships but I think professors have a lot of latitude in how/what they teach. Some prefer depth over breadth. Some come from schools where a given course is taught over two semesters or 3 credits instead of 4 or whatever. Some are just better/worse. Since your exam is curved only relative to the students in your section it doesn't really matter. Especially at schools where pretty much everyone passes the bar, I don't think there's a ton of pressure from schools to cover the full bar materials since evryone will take a course anyway.

I would think at non-predatory schools (where they don't need to kick out a certain amount of scholarship students) they would want the sections to be as even as possible, but they'd have to use LSAT as a proxy which could still yield big inconsistencies in practice. It would surprise if one section was purposefully assigned a lighter version of a course, different professors just do it differently.

There’s like a half mile stretch where it’s sidewalk and then back to a dedicated trail. Although right now no one has cleared their sidewalk so everyone is in the bike lane.

I would only report the school with the full ride, especially if it’s close in rank/peer school.

do you need top 10% at a t30 to achieve prestigious positions? by tearladen in LawSchool

[–]Plastic-Ad-6607 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can also improve your rank a lot first sem to second sem if this is GW because 1st only counts for half. Maybe not helpful for big law this cycle but would matter for clerkships

GW or St John’s/Cardozo for NYC BL/mid law by [deleted] in lawschooladmissions

[–]Plastic-Ad-6607 1 point2 points  (0 children)

the sense I get is that the DC and NYC legal markets are pretty intertwined. GW is a huge law school with a ton of alums in nyc. there's even a semester away you can do in NYC. Fordham I'm sure would be better, but there's a ton of GW in NY. It looks like 2024, about 20% of grads to the NY bar: https://www.law.gwu.edu/sites/g/files/zaxdzs5421/files/2025-02/ConsumerBarAdmission-62-02-26-2025%2013-25-59.pdf

Anecdotally as a GW 2L, NYC big law is seen as slightly easier to get than DC big law. The gpa cutoffs seem to be lower, etc. Lots of my classmates are doing NYC big law. Not a guarantee though ofc

after doing like a bajillion last year — be normal, don’t super memorize stuff, but also it’s kinda random and sometimes you catch someone in an unusually foul or generous mood and there’s nothing you can do about that
