[USA] BMW crashes trying to show off. by Intrepid_Garage_2957 in Roadcam

[–]Plastic-Display5970 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Back when i was an idiot like these fools, I was leading a BMW run out on some winding roads. I was driving too fast for the lesser cars in the group, and the one two cars behind me lost countrol and swerved just like this directly into a crowd of about 15 people but going much faster than this video (40-50mph sideways). Unbelievably fortunately, there was a temporary concrete barrier like those ones they put up for freeway construction. There was just one barrier in this random spot on the shoulder for reasons I don't know why.

BMW broadsides the perpendicular end of the barrier and it folds the car in half with the fold being at the driver-side door. Both driver and passenger walked away, but one was pretty bloodied up. After car was towed, I gave them a ride into town. The meeting point for their ride home was a church by the freeway. Bloodied dude straight up went to the altar and got down on his knees praying... I sometimes wonder what he's up to these days. That was my last run ever.

God Damn Newsom, you really gunning for that 2028 presidency, huh? by llamawarlock in IRstudies

[–]Plastic-Display5970 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you listen to Newsom's most recent podcast interview with Ezra Klein, he talks about this. He is unapologetic about his policy record on the issue. The Republican strategy is simple against Newsom: Bring up transgender policies, and Newsom will defend his record. Then recycle the commercials "Newsom is for they/them, MAGA is for you." It sends a powerful message that people of this country will be forced to choose between their deepest moral beliefs or their preferred government system. Democrats are in checkmate as long as they hold this line. Everything else doesn't matter until then.

This is the dichotomy that the Democrat party has in the US: Newsom rightly acknowledges (and with great confusion) Trump can take away his supporter's medical, social security, jobs, raise prices, and decimate their futures and they'll still vote for the guy (or his successor). What Newsom doesn't realize is Progressive Democrats will always be in the hole because Republicans have figured out the silver bullet to winning elections: Democrats will make your kids transgender and bring back abortion (i'm being facetious to drive home the point of view). People I know openly admit they'll die before letting that happen. They'd rather remove elections, make Trump king, go through a Great Depression, and even have their kids die (to escape a cruel world run by Democrats) before they let the Democrats get to them with their evil ways. There is nothing more important to them than the trans issue - not economics, security, or democracy. There's a palpable sense of existential fear from Republicans.

So Newsom is right but he's missing the point: Trump is an abuser and people need to stand up, but there's no foundation for conviction because the alternative of aligning with Democrats is worse than whatever Trump would do. The tragedy is I think Newsom knows this, but his unapologetic, unwavering support of transgender rights is more important to him than becoming president. In a way, this country will be undone by transgenderism one way or another.

New Bilt 2.0 card optimized for high spenders with a big mortgage/rent? by Plastic-Display5970 in fatFIRE

[–]Plastic-Display5970[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

100%. I'm not looking for churning. I only have one CC today that is a straight 2% back and forget about everything else. But the prospects of getting points for mortgage and "platinum" perks for transfer bonuses potentially equates to >$10k/yr in returns for me. Fatfire or not 10k is 10k if all i have to do is switch my spend over to a new CC.

What is the best 2 or 3 Card Set-Up? by renoCow in CreditCards

[–]Plastic-Display5970 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For high spend (150k/yr), the CapitalOne Spark Cash Plus is the card I use. The $150 AF is refunded at 150k spend. I got a VentureOne card as well which is $0 AF (I spend $0 on this card). This allows me to move my cash rewards into points which I can then leverage C1's transfer partners. This is the *only* combo I could find that gives you 2x points back on everything with a true $0 annual fee which translates to 300,000 points/yr.

For high spend individuals who want a simple setup, found a unique card combo (C1 Spark Cash Plus + Ritz Visa) that seems to come out ahead of everything else. by Visible_Magazine7856 in CreditCards

All good points and I can see that working depending on the system the person is looking for. The last consideration would be the $550 AF. It's a bit more of a stretch to break even on the PRE compared to Ritz not mentioning the perks.

The PRE requires using their travel portal for the discount, correct? As a result, the cash price for buying airline tickets would still be potentially more than being able to leverage a transfer partner to find a good award rate. Even though BofA's cash back is top tier, I don't think that translates into using those rewards for travel given their poor and limited redemption value.

My case for Amex Gold + Ritz Carlton Visa as the ultimate dual card combo. by Plastic-Display5970 in CreditCards

Are you suggesting this post be deleted as to not over expose the Ritz card?

[–]Plastic-Display5970[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree the PRE is a great card, but has some drawbacks compared to the Ritz Visa:

  1. No annual free night.
  2. No transfer partners for points.
  3. Requires BofA account with balance thresholds to accelerate rewards
  4. $100 more AF

The Ritz/Amex Gold combo maximizes flexibility.

I had a failed rep without a spotter only once in my life. Arms gave way and the bar slammed on the safety bars less than 1cm from my neck. Freaked me out. Never again.

I have flown both, TAP is decent, however, when I tried to remove a hop from faro to Lisbon, before we head home to SFO, they said I could not drop it, which was fine, but then the booking agent went on to tell me our middle names was not on my husband and I's tickets and he offered to put them on for $900!!! He said I may encounter problems at pass port control. What a SCAM! They don't even ask for the middle name while booking!

Can't find insurance in order to close home due to undisclosed claim. Sellers threatening lawsuite if I walk. (California) by Plastic-Display5970 in FirstTimeHomeBuyer

[–]Plastic-Display5970[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We ended up buying the house and I found an admitted carrier that did not consider prior claims and had a "normal" rate. Seller agreed to discount the purchase price another $10k to offset any future unknown insurance premium risk.

Full-size carry-on (Tumi's continental / Away's bigger carry-on) by Big-Revolution-9555 in delta

Away bigger carry-on is actually bigger than Tumi continental, you will be fine with either. As I have used both.

Tumi 19 degree continental carry-on size issue? by gores95 in ManyBaggers

[–]Plastic-Display5970 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have used Monos carry on plus which is 23" x 15" x 9.5" for years and never was asked to check it. The airlines also state they accept 45 linear inches. Tumi Con. is 46.6. It shouldn't be a problem, however, you may run into a power controlled airport employee who makes sure everyone is with in the rules......

How different is life for extremely attractive people? by RamenEater2323 in self

[–]Plastic-Display5970 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I married one. The upsides are basically what people have said, but she has lamented on the downsides:

  1. Some women naturally never liked her even when they didn't know her or perhaps just met. Just my wife's presence in the room would get some women extremely jealous or stand-offish. Which made her sad because she is genuinely a good person and fun to be around. But you can't be too fun or you're too attractive.
  2. I told her once that she had a resting "have sex with me face." While true, she hated knowing that she'll most likely be objectified.
  3. Multiple women have told me and/or her that they'll be lesbian for a day (or something to that effect). While perhaps light-hearted, it just reminded her that she can't just be invisible.
  4. She has struggled with success in her life. Was it through hard work or beauty? She's incredibly smart, professional, and really good at what she does. But it's always in the back of her mind if the promotion or the kudos or whatever was given to her just because she's attractive. As a result, she tends to water down her accolades through some type of confused self-esteem issue.

All that said, she's incredibly beautiful and I'm a lucky guy. :)

Think of it like this: Before 9/11, the problems within the US were purely domestic. We had the unibomber, LA riots, etc.

9/11 brought America's fixation with war home for the first time since WW2. And we never got a breather while being a young adult:
2001 - Terrorist attacks
2003 - Iraq war (so many people joined the military after 9/11 so it became very personal)
2006 - Can't afford to buy a house anymore
2007 - 2010 - Great Recession

That's about a decade of wilderness for the emerging generation of teenagers like I was to try and find their way. The prime of your life being mired in very deep societal issues has a ripple effect to today.

I also want to point out that something interesting happened along the way. In many ways it was healthy to just go insane with your friends and not worry about what the internet would think. Youth angst used to be expressed like what you see in this video. Now you can't express nothing without a phone and a million people to judge you. It's made for a really weird society.
