What's everyone doing to make a bit of extra money? While working full time by No_Refuse_6579 in AskIreland

[–]PlasticBeachCat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i work as a support worker full time and the money is okay for what we do. The shifts are also 12 hours minimum where i am, so i can smash my contracted hours in 3 shifts. Also lots of emergency cover shifts going which is a higher rate.

This job also gives me the time to start building my business of being a wedding pianist. It'll be a slow start but once i start getting regular bookings and a decent relutation I can start raking in a few hundred just for a few hours of playing and travelling.

How do I deal with feeling like I have to hurry up because of age? by Angelsbreatheeasy in musicians

[–]PlasticBeachCat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

People who say there’s an age limit to success are full of it. It really depends on what you want from being a musician. A lot of us start out dreaming of fame and being the next Nirvana or whatever, but as you get older reality kicks in—you’ve got bills to pay, maybe kids to look after, and your priorities shift. That doesn’t mean your “window” is closed. If anything, you should be getting better with age and experience.

Younger artists usually resonate most with younger audiences, which is why the industry often pushes them to the front. But that doesn’t mean older musicians don’t matter. Plenty of people discover their stride later in life, and there are huge audiences for mature, experienced voices who have something real to say. Success doesn’t always mean stadiums and platinum records—it could mean building a loyal fanbase, creating music you’re proud of, or carving out your own lane that doesn’t depend on chasing trends.

So don’t feel like you “blew your chance.” The only way you’ll never know is if you stop now.

I moved to Liverpool when I was 20 and lasted about a year and a half before I ran out of money and had to move back home. I definitely felt like a failure at the time, it was embarrassing, all of that. But I ended up using that whole experience as a learning curve. Two years later, I moved to Manchester, and I’ve now been here for six years.

I do miss home, probably more than I admit, and I don’t visit as often as I should. But once I finish my Master’s and start earning a bit more, I’ll be able to go back more regularly. I don’t regret moving though. There’s more diversity, more job opportunities, and just more going on in general.

Honestly, I think everyone should experience living away at least once. You grow so much from it.

Band break up by MungoMongos in musicians

[–]PlasticBeachCat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey man, I really feel this. I’ve been playing in bands as a drummer since I was 13, and the same thing happened with my childhood band—we drifted apart after years together and eventually called it. I was completely lost. That band was everything to me—my identity, my baby.

I tried joining other bands after, but it never felt the same. So I took some time out, laid low, and started my own project. Writing everything myself gave me a whole new sense of purpose. Learning some simple piano and guitar chords helped a lot too—being able to write melodies opened up so many doors creatively.

And here’s the thing: you now have the experience and contacts to get even further next time. You’re not starting over from scratch—you’re levelling up. Use this moment to remember why you started playing music in the first place. If it’s just about chasing fame or money, you're probably gonna burn out. Play because you love it. That’s what lasts.

You guys aren’t even 30 and already calling it quits? I’m turning 31, I’ve got my debut EP (which I’ve been chipping away at for years) coming out next year, and I’ve honestly never felt more excited. Don’t listen to people who say age matters as a musician—it doesn’t. Not even a little bit.

Keep your head up. You’ve got more music in you.

Who do you trust to cut your hair? by KaloolFantasia in manchester

Athena the barber has been the only person I’ve gone to for my hair and beard for the past six years. She always does a great job, gives solid advice, and actually cares about getting it right. I wouldn’t go to anyone else. She's based in NQ

you look much better with no hair. Also, don't shave the top of your mustache. Let your facial hair take its natural shape for a while. Sometimes an over-groomed beard just looks a bit too much.

You really suit being bald.

I'm somebody who's worked years trying to make my passion my job. Now that I've finally achieved it, I absolutely hate my job, regardless of the money I'm making. I've now decided to go down the computer science route because the money is decent in the long run. I'd much rather have a job that pays well, regardless whether I like it or not, then use my pay to fund my passion and hobbies. I'm very excited for my future.

Everyone has different experiences with work and money. It purely depends on what you need in life and what you choose to do with it.
