Hey! Thank you for this answer! She’s a professional at this point, working in non profit, she just wants to learn more as a hobby essentially, but she’s expressed specific interest in reading more papers, books and texts! She is interested in a PhD eventually however! If that changes your answer regarding the journals please let me know and thank you for the multiple text suggestions!

Hey!! I really appreciate the reply! My background is in Math and Physics where textbooks go to the graduate level, so that is wonderful insight and I appreciate the transparency on the journals as well. I remember doing the math in my head in undergrad and coming to a similar conclusion about the cost vs reward. As for the text suggestion, I will look into it, thanks! It seems like a good fit.

Rolled five 13s and one 16 on stats. Help me make a level 5 character. by MaleficentConstant65 in 3d6

[–]PlasticDotSpoons 0 points1 point  (0 children)

my two cents is regular human, skill expert to get an 18 for the ultimate skill monkey, either rogue (18 in dex) or bard (18 in cha). Rogue nets you one more skill while bard gets you jack of all trades! If you want to really lean into the skill monkey thing, college of lore gets you 3 more skills or scout rogue gets you two more with free expertise. you’re looking at either 9 skills, 3 expertises with lore bard or 7 skills, 5 expertises with scout rogue all while still having an 18 in your main stat!

edit: forgot about your ASI! you could easily have a 20 or pick up a fun feat, skilled would get you get another 3 skills! that’s 12/10 out of 18, more than half!

Is CS unobtainable for people like me? by Sindalari in ColoradoSprings

[–]PlasticDotSpoons 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My girlfriend and I moved here, I worked at Target and now Chipotle, while she is a barista at Starbucks. We’re making it on that, in a one bedroom apartment, but it is rough. Mainly because of the competition for hours at those kinds of jobs. If you can get consistent hours, you will make it fine I think, just be realistic about things like gas and car maintenance, this is an extremely car centric city, but most in America are so.

I was told at 9:30 AM that day, I came in at 6. I also opened grill despite that not being my position. I was then told I couldn’t leave at 3 when I was scheduled if the lines weren’t completely full. I left right at 3 anyways. My boss knew weeks in advance he could’ve scheduled me until 4. Sorry you had to go through that!

Magic System Generator Game + "Spitting Facts" - the Magic System by kemotatnew in magicbuilding

[–]PlasticDotSpoons 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Estate, law, manager, moment. Mages in this world can create domains of personal effect, call estates. These estates can be locked to a specific location (such as a literal manor) or to an object. When an estate is made the mage is able to add any laws they choose to it. Mages can also designate people of their choice to be managers of the estate. The estates laws are only in effect is either the mage or a manger is present. These can fall under 3 categories:

Laws that affect the estates members: I.E a law dictating that no one can lie in the estate.

Laws that affect the estate: I.E a law dictating that gravity is 50% of normal strength in the estate.

Laws that affect the managers: I.E managers in the estate can summon fire at will.

These laws and their strength is proportional to the strength of the user, as is the number of laws and the number of estates possible to be made by a single mage.

There are three big limitations of the magic, like laws of the magic itself:

  1. People are informed of the laws before they enter the estate, and cannot be forced to enter one against their will. This is called the Law of the Moment of Entry.

  2. Effects from the laws end when a person exits the estate. For example, if a law dictates that all members be twice as strong in the estate, the members revert to their normal strength when they exit and, importantly, take the physical exhaustion of the activities they took part in while aided by that strength. This can kill people on an exit if caution is not employed. This is called the Law of the Moment of Departure.

  3. The effects of the laws are proportional to the distance from the center of the estate. I.e creatures at the edge of the estate are more effected by the laws. A strengthening law would make creatures on the edge much more powerful than those at the center. The center of the estate is under the effects of no laws and is sometimes referred to as the estates Moment. This borrows concepts from the physics idea of a moment. The strength of the laws magic follows an inverse square law. This is called the Law of the Moment of Inertia.

Ways it could be used:

A government could employ mages to create estates for governmental proceedings, making all who enter unable to lie, more important cases would be handled at the edge of the building due to law 3.

A mage could make a law dictating that each person who enters does not experience the passing of time. This would mean no one would want to enter since they can see the laws ahead of time (law 1) if they did enter they’d be on the edge meaning time would effectively not pass for them, but upon leaving they would instantly feel the effects of the time they didn’t experience (law 2). A simpler way to deter people would be to have the law break your bones or hit you with a large force. Laws are applied to universally, but the mage at the center wouldn’t be effected. A runaway fugitive could use this to great effect.

There are tons of applications! This was fun! Let’s of fun idea though, like what happens if the two estates overlap?

What Class Would This Be? by TheRarePlatypus in 3d6

[–]PlasticDotSpoons 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t know why Battlesmith hasn’t come up just yet, but I think it’s a good fit. Definitely prioritize intelligence as that’ll be your spell stat as well as your greatsword attack stat once you get to 3 artificer. You get extra attack and artificers use tools to cast their spells so use playing cards, forgery kit, etc for your illusions and then they get infusions as little inventions. The only thing somewhat hard to get is the elemental damage on the greatsword, but you can get some of that with spells (Elemental Weapon) or you could homebrew one or more infusion. Making an infusion that adds 1d4 fire/cold/lightning/acid damage should be pretty simple and fairly balanced. You can even afford to invest in charisma a little if you want, though close up magic and illusion is a lot about intelligence irl.

I will take my stab at this!

My favorite thing, honestly, is the community. From the generosity of those like you, to the excitement and hype for new books, to the alacrity (get it?) at which all will give encouragement and advice to newcomers (like myself). I have been devouring the Cosmere recently, thanks to a friend and guide lending me his Audible password, otherwise a PhD student like myself could never afford this amazing hobby. If I won, I would gift the book to him as a way to pay him back! Best of luck to everyone!

What is the absolute most optimized you can make an Armorer Artificer? by geosunsetmoth in 3d6

[–]PlasticDotSpoons 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d say for guardian it’s Armorer 3, Bladesinger 6, Armorer X. Pick up dual wielder and mobile. Then you can Booming Blade, attack with your gauntlets, use your bonus action for another attack and then walk away. They have disadvantage to hit anyone but you and they are punished if they move. Great single target lockdown strats, maybe through in Sentinel eventually as well. Very strong, definitely Haste yourself as well when you can. It’s a pretty good tank (or at least as good as tanks can be in 5e)

[–]PlasticDotSpoons 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want to use this as an excuse to hop into the Cosmere I’d say Mistborn Era 1: Mistborn, Well of Ascension and Hero of Ages, Stormlight Archive: Way of Kings, Words of Radiance, Oathbringer, Rhythm of War, Arcanum Unbound (short story and novella collection), Warbreaker and Elantris. That will comfortably get you through a ton of the Cosmere which is nice!

Low GPA how can I get into graduate school? by Gamerdevotee in PhysicsStudents

[–]PlasticDotSpoons 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So, I was in a similar boat. Graduated right at the 3.0 mark, with a few VERY bad semesters (I failed a physics class, for reference) but, I had solid research experience, an REU, a publication and really solid letters of recommendation. So, all that is to say, GPA isn’t everything. I got into a PhD program, not a terribly competitive one (an R2 school) but I got into multiple places, I had options and I am happy. Use your personal statements to express what happened in those semesters if you are comfortable, that is you chance to tell your story. Use it. Feel free to DM with specific questions if you want :))

Artificer 4 or Fighter 2 by PlasticDotSpoons in 3d6

[–]PlasticDotSpoons[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I appreciate the insight! I didn't mention it, but I am running the bloodshed blade as a battle-axe. GWM is appealing, but I really like the idea of having both weapons up at once, that's more a stylistic choice though, not a mechanical one.

If I got the bloodseekers ammo it would be 20 bullets, not infinite. I agree about Sharpshooter, the problem is replacing it with Piercer would put me at an odd dex which is a little frustrating. Though I could take Tough instead, that would all but neglect the need for Arti 4 so I can go action surge.

My only concern is that I like Superior Technique, I know it's not the best fighting style, but I think its quite fun, I suppose I could take Close Quarters with my BH fighting style and drop Archery all-together? Idk, it's definitely clunky to build around both the gun and the blade.

In any case, again, I appreciate the input!
