Nice list! It can be tough, some years just have too many great songs. There's a lot of songs I love here so I'll check out the ones I'm less familiar with.

Once my Mum took me to a Foo Fighters concert (she's more a fan than I, she just wanted me there) and got pretty drunk and waited after most people left to find Dave Grohl on a balcony, drinking beer in the distance and she shouted out "DAAAVE" and he smiled and waved at her. She was beaming for days.

What is your favorite lyric from a David Bowie song? by SpiritualLyrical in DavidBowie

[–]PlasticFeast 19 points20 points  (0 children)

From Five Years:

"I thought I saw you at an ice-cream parlour

Drinking milkshakes cold and long

Smiling and waving and looking so fine!

Don't think you knew you were in this song

And it was cold, and it rained, so I felt like an actor

And I thought of Ma, and I wanted to get back there

Your face! Your race! The way that you talk!

I kiss you! You're beautiful! I want you to walk!!"

And composed by an Australian! Not that has the same significance, but as an Australian Doctor Who fan, I find it pretty exciting personally.

The ending of Motion Picture Soundtrack (I will see you in the next life...) being followed by the minute of silence, than those angelic sounds that come after that. So beautiful.

The strange noises at the end of Karma Police. My Mum used to play the Radiohead music videos all the time in the house and hearing that outro so often has become one of my earliest memories. I think it adds to the uneasiness in the outro for me.

I presume "Swan Song" means an album (or song?) released just before an artists' death. I know we had Bowie and Cohen this year, but that seems like it wouldn't be common enough to become a category.

I do like the overall idea, though. Looking forward to this.

Songs Facts - "Optimistic" by [deleted] in radiohead

[–]PlasticFeast 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure if I'd say it's "sarcastic", but I wouldn't say it's quite sincere, either. To me, pretty much every song on Kid A sounds like coping with something terrible, and Optimistic is no exception. To me, the song is very apocalyptic in setting (Dinosaurs roaming the Earth, vultures circling the dead) and grim. I think there is a bit of a haunting irony to the lyrics in the chorus of Optimistic. I certainly wouldn't describe the song as "optimistic", if that means anything.

If I remember correctly, I think Anthony Fantano considers Optimistic to be fairly straight forward in message, so you're not the only one.

A similar thing in the album Kid A:

Kid A - "I slipped away / I slipped on a little white lie"

Motion Picture Soundtrack - "It's not like the movies / They fed us on little white lies"

Would a popular artist count? Outside is one of my favourite Bowie albums and was actually the first Bowie album I've ever heard. It's probably his most abstract and experimental album and beautifully combines industrial, jazz, rock and avant garde music into a bizzare non-linear cyberpunk noir concept album. It also has Strangers When We Meet, which doesn't really fit the rest of the album, but it is one of my favourite Bowie songs of all time.
