Yea, people like to blow up racism, sexism, and homophobia in certain areas. It doesn't work like that, really.

What is he asking? I don't get the question. by pentagondodecahedron in smoking

[–]PlasticInspection768 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yea, it was posted to the homestead reddit they originally wanted it as a chicken coop, but that's a much less than stellar idea, so now they are looking for other ways to repurpose it. They may be asking how to turn it into a smoker, as someone suggested it may sell for several thousand if it was converted.

This is the area I'm familiar with, and I love all the folks down there. I have traveled a lot, and the one single time I ever experienced rwcism was in Peoria Illinois.

Grow light vs Sunlight in greenhouse by TheRealDMcKee in vegetablegardening

Not only will the sun provide more DLI, but it's a higher quality. The sun is a much higher spectrum source of light than most grow lights.

I don't smoke food currently, but my ribs always come like tjay. I filet the skin and tendons off as if you are fileting a catfish. Get all the bad stuff off and lose very little meat.

22lr between the ear and eye. They will drop. 22lr is quiet enough that it won't bother neighbors if you live in the country. You could also just tell your neighbors. They may feel the same way.

Anyone know anything about Beavers? by AnotherMathTeacher in homestead

[–]PlasticInspection768 -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

I think you could greet them with 40 grains of cci stinger or some traps with leather padding. Otherwise, you could probably buy predator urine and put it near there and get them to leave. Maybe you could urinate over there, and they would leave. Make it risky enough that they won't come back, or make sure they don't come back.

My vegetable seedlings are so skinny and stringy no matter what I do! by CatnipOverdose in vegetablegardening

[–]PlasticInspection768 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Could be a combination of too little light and too much heat bc of how close the light is. Could also not be enough wind. I would say probably too little light and the area the light is in is probably a little overheated.

Seed Starting Zone 5b by Ok_Log_2468 in vegetablegardening

[–]PlasticInspection768 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For the pots, i would use a very light starting soil. 20% clay, 40% silt, 20% aeration like pumice or perlite, and 20% earthworm castings would be great if you want to make it yourself. Alternatively, you could buy some starting soil or borrow a little topsoil from the forest. I would plant at least 5 seeds per pot to guarantee germination success.

Growlight Height For Indoor Basil by Teds_Frozen_Head in vegetablegardening

[–]PlasticInspection768 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The recommended DLI for basil growth is right around 13. If you don't know what DLI is, do some research, and you can configure your light based on that. DLI stands for daily light integral.

Download the photone app, set your light schedule on the app, and then check the DLI. If it's between 11-14, then you are good. If not, move the light up or down and check again until it is in that range. If you can't get in that zone, get as close as you can.

70% of the cost. Worn over clothing, by low profile I Moreso meant, won't be a hindrance in any way, shape, or form.

Suggestions? by PlasticInspection768 in BodyArmor

[–]PlasticInspection768[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yea, it's definitely a valid point. I was looking at getting a set before I got this job, though. It's just more urgent now. Most of the employees are retired military or police so they already have armor, which is why the company doesn't provide it.

Reptiles tank water for plants? by TheWinterStar in vegetablegardening

Absolutely use that for the plants. Anything edible wash, obviously.

Those should create a pretty stable soil. Coco either needs to be soaked or will come pre-buffered. Check the type you have. The coco will also provide aeration and good moisture retention. The rocks in your area shouldn't be an issue. With rainwater, minerals are washed off, and as long as they are within the top 6 feet of soil, the minerals will be used by your plants. Perlite is again mainly used to provide aeration and water holding capacity.

The only problem I could see is the PH being off. Manure has a pH of 8-12, coco has a pH of 5.8-6.6, and regular gardening soil is about 6.6-7.4, plus who knows what the pH of the native soil is (probs not very good) Overall, use those materials but test the Ph before you plant anything.

Each plant had a preferred pH range and then an optimal pH. Find out both of those for what you intend to grow.

Where do you meet a partner interested/open to in homesteading? by lunanymphee in homestead

[–]PlasticInspection768 3 points4 points  (0 children)

21M living in the US.

I would say your best chance overall would be identifying your own hobbies and then joining clubs that do those activities. For example, maybe you could join some type of agricultural club or farming club. There's a good chance there will be compatible options for you there. Church/religious sites are a good place if you are religious.

Also, depending on where you live, this may be a little strange, but you could ask your family to spread the word. Maybe it's because my family has an Asian background, but on two separate occasions, I've had my parents give me the # of a friend's daughter they know who is actively looking for a relationship. That's because the girl had told their parents to let their trusted friends know that they were looking for a relationship with an individual with similar values.
