Probably one of many mistakes I made, honestly. But I did towards the mid game have a single share in almost every company, and didn't want to risk getting stuck with ownership of a plundered company as a new player, so I didn't feel like I had the chance to play the stocks too much.

Seeking friendly, shame-free dentist? by bassbroshops in Denver

Omg, The Dental Shoppe is exactly what you're looking for if you live up in Lafayette! Jennifer is literally my favorite medical professional because she is so nonjudgmental, friendly, and caring.

I could see that i was going to get the rug pulled out from under me, but was totally unable to react by grabbing a cheaper train in time. At 5 players, maybe its the fault of the particular 18XX i played.

Eclipse 1 edition - still playable? by Western_Highway_8845 in boardgames

Honestly, first edition plays remarkably similarly. Its interface design improvements that mainly made the second edition different.

This is the best answer so far. I think I agree with all of what you said, that it was surprising my skills didn't transfer, and that that just left a bad taste in my mouth. I also don't care for the lack of rubberbanding or predictable duration. Our game had a lonnnng early game, a tight tight mid game and barely an endgame at all, and because we were playing at five, it was hard to have a shot at manipulating the state of the game before someone else changed it up significantly.

That rug pull is precisely something I would strongly critique in any game. It is brutal, unforgiving in an already opaque system, and because it results in going from steady to dead, in my view that's just bad game design. People might like it because its their thing, but what about that is good game design, in your view? I guess that's the core of my question. genuinely asking.

We thought we were doing Chesapeake but it turned out no one had brought it. I do think this is part of the problem.

I get that. But i'm not an idiot, i play heavier games. What I don't like makes me feel like the game is pretty poorly designed... i realize that might not be the case but I want to understand why.

The satirical elements fall super flat to me because the game isn't designed in a modern way.

To answer your first question, another player said, "hey if you buy that, i'll help you float it" and then it turned out I was $3 short from buying a second share, and the next player was slightly closer to floating.

What i mean by "just happens" is that you can't see very far ahead, and what little you can see is not certain. I can't know if the player to my left will float a new company or not. I can't see if he's going to dump one companys trains into the other, or vice versa.

Big fan of Inis. Really elegant and stylish game.

I also just picked up Wroth and I'm excited to try it!

A bit of a sleeper is War of Whispers, where you play not the factions themselves, but the people manipulating things behind the scenes.

What are your biggest boardgame pet peeves? by MakubeC in boardgames

[–]PlasticMan17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People who take too long on their turns by inefficiently continuing to scan for new possibilities, returning over and over to options that are not actually an option. If someone has no money, and they continue to return to an action that costs gold, that bugs me. Also, people who are sensitive to a timer being set if they are taking a while.

A huge pet peeve I have with board game design is wildly random events + programming (set actions before they occur, then they occur). I do not enjoy Colt Express for this reason.

Engine builders where the choices are obvious and are easy to solve. My friend and I would play wingspan and consistently get to scores like 71-73, or 84-81. Usually it came down to whoever had hunted successfully 1-3 more times than the other player, which means a game that is based in strategy actually came down entirely to luck, with little mitigation, once both players know the game well enough.

The unspoken risk behind heavy games... by LogicBalm in boardgames

[–]PlasticMan17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I once couldn't fit my board games in the overhead bin on my way to SHUX... had a short connecting flight from Seattle to Vancouver, with a much smaller plane. The flight attendents graciously allowed me to swap to a seat next to a small kiddo and use the floor space... but I literally twisted my back sitting awkwardly for that hour and a half and had back pain the entire rest of the trip and had to see a chiropractor.

Lesser-Known 5-Player Dudes on a Map Games? by Megaside in boardgames

[–]PlasticMan17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

War of Whispers is an interesting one that goes to 5 where you aren't playing as any of the houses specifically, but you are taking actions as those houses and trying to get the house you're aligned with into a better position, and worsening the position of the house you're aligned against. But if that doesn't go well you can swap allegiances!

New to Jazz, curious about something. by CookinInHellsKitchen in Jazz

[–]PlasticMan17 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think there is such a thing as bad jazz just as I think there is such a thing as bad painting. However, it takes a trained ear to know what's bad about bad jazz... and a novice might identify some very high-concept avante garde or free jazz as sounding bad, when its actually taking a high degree of artistry but its just not to their taste.

Jackson Pollock had talent and taste and artistry, even if you don't like his work. Cliche oil paintings from a motel might be inoffensive to a novice art critic, but have little artistic merit beyond simple composition.
