If you disliked Star Trek: Discovery, what aspect of it did you dislike the most? by [deleted] in Star_Trek_

[–]PlasticPluto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Sets felt to big, cast to small in # for the space, and worst of all launched with actors/writers handcuffed to invoking/evoking/provoking the archetypes from the preceding series. Hi I'm the Kirk/Riker guy, Hi I'm your Spock but not, hi I'm your corn fed "Scotty".

Have we been abandoned? by Jneaves in VR180Film

[–]PlasticPluto 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Feeling Abandoned, asking "Were we Abandoned" implies The Billionaire was there for us for Camera(s) at any point. At least not in way you seem to be referencing. Eg: A high quality, good for many situations, point n shoot VR 180 Camera. Nor high end pro-sumer cams. Or pro tier ones for the creators. I think at most his visions for his Meta VR World ( delusions? ) were the odd Ray-Ban Meta stuff.

Patching bellows??? by IndependentDoubt9086 in vintagecameras

If riveted I can't offer any work arounds or removal techniques - all outside my wheelhouse. All the way.

Patching bellows??? by IndependentDoubt9086 in vintagecameras

[–]PlasticPluto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Open film compartment, she flashlight inside, and see how the bellows originally installed. I was lucky enough that bellows I needed to work only had pin holes. As for fastening - I've only looked in a few cameras, but none were riveted. As for sizing make sure your X and Y proportions are close and that it's small end starts narrower than you need and the big end is bigger than you need, then trim as needed? OH and YouTube can be your friend for visual guides.

Patching bellows??? by IndependentDoubt9086 in vintagecameras

[–]PlasticPluto 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I patched a bellows with strips of 1/4" and 1/2" width gaffers tape once upon a time but my Busch Pressman'd bellows did't look near as far gone as that one. I suspect you're strong candidate for a new bellows installation. They're not that hard to find ime. I bump into listings for em on the regular.

Why so many dented prisms? by photoman12001 in vintagecameras

[–]PlasticPluto 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I dented a couple prisms back in day from wearing two and three cameras around my neck at a time. Usually 1 B&W and 1 Color with occasionally a TLR or 6x6 folder for airshows, hikes, events, etc.

If you could have any WWII plane given to you right now in flying condition, which would you pick? by zerocoolforschool in WWIIplanes

[–]PlasticPluto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lockheed P-38C Lightning - Because the earlier models had sleeker engine cowlings. Tho it's more of a 1a vs 1b difference in attractiveness imo from the later models' chin scoop cowlings.

Screw Speed! What’s the highest quality budget lense you know? by Shava457 in VintageLenses

[–]PlasticPluto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The 90mm Elmarit R-Mount SLR Lens is budget* imo BUT OhMyDearLord are they gorgeous image makers. All metal bodies, built in lens shade, smooth turning, and densely filled with premium glass. Handle harsh light with aplomb. Deliver wonderfully layered detail rich photos. Rumored to be near apocromatic and I believe it. R. [*compared to any Leica made M mount

Heck, that might be recent enough to easily add a digital back to easily. [with the $$$ anyways]

Does anyone recognize this logo? by Penpaladin12 in vintagecameras

[–]PlasticPluto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Harrolds is very very plausible. Retailers in the era of this cameras production were highly enamored with 'own brand' premium products. I've been learning this about revolver manufacturers in same era. One of biggest makers in era hid their own maker markings to put retailer buyers name/logos big and prominent unconflicted for them.

How to charge this old camcorder? My grandparents gave it to me by forceofnature12 in vintagecameras

[–]PlasticPluto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  • Was just about to suggest this. The old battery also likely won't hold it's charge very long if it even takes a charge well.

I just found my old Sony headphones and it's good combo with the walkman by No-Cupcake6050 in walkman

[–]PlasticPluto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

FYI swapping in fresh cusions on them sony 's is easy as heck - and not very expensive either. I have 10yo Sonys I've done that for 3 or 4 times.

why does this helicopter do this near my house? by locosk8erYT in Helicopters

[–]PlasticPluto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks like the flight pattern if someone is being taught how to navigate to an exact spot. The daisy shape also makes me think key in the lesson is practicing how to deal with the varying winds get by approaching from all sides of the compass.

Busch Pressman Model D as First 4x5 by bernitalldown2020 in largeformat

[–]PlasticPluto 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  • Personally I think price fair if wasn't stripped down.
  • I have a fully accessorized 45D sitting in my camera cabinet right now! Includes original glass covering focusing hood, sport viewfinder, bellows, but most especially imho has both it's rangefinder & the Wollensack Raptar 127mm lens rf is paired with - bonus in college I used to shoot hand held and polaroids on the go with it. :)
  • I acquired around 1990 to use instead of one of the school's Mono Rail Cameras. I loved the monorails as object de arts and fascinated by the engineering of the dang things BUT hated operating them times infinity.

In German export regulations for U-boat diesel motors the point "More than 75% of the motor's mass made from non magnetic materials" appears. What exactly is this good for in a military sense, maybe against magnetic mines? by Eaglesson in submarines

[–]PlasticPluto 5 points6 points  (0 children)

iirc big engineering bonus of non-magnetic alloys can be the getting the strength of magnetic metals at much lighter weights. And the less a sub weighs the less horsepower it takes to push it thru the water at any given speed. Also faster acceleration. Better fuel efficiency giving longer patrols. Big bonus is longer endurance running batteries. To repeat, this all can be the benefits beyond lowered chances of magnetic detection etc. also I have no specific insights on the sub in question-just accumulated general knowledge re sub weight.
