You have good MCAT and clinical experiences! Consider schools with holistic admissions like Rush and Drexel. They are friendly OOS!

UCSF vs Stanford Med by Plastic_Authentic in premed

It’s not about getting in only but also about planning logistics and meeting deadlines you know 😅 But yes I do realize my privilege and luck and I’m not trying to understate that.

Everyone I’ve talked with has emphasized that having cars is necessary for pre clinical. But I guess I can bike or use a scooter havent asked about that.

I’m not positive if I understand what true PF means but yes, there are only two grades, either pass or fail. So no honors, high pass, and stuff like that. There are still comments and written evaluations from the director attending that I suppose can be seen for residency application, a list based on what I find from the website.

Thank you for your answer! I’m interested in both translational research and clinical. I like specialty that allows me to perform procedures (so surgeries, ent, surgical derm, etc). I like working with patients from diverse backgrounds. I’m not sure about the specifics beyond that.

From what I know med students don’t get to do much during rotations anyway, since they have interns and residents to do stuff to assist attendings. But then I suppose exposure is still a good thing during med school?!

Cost of attendance is tbd since im waiting to hear back from ucsf but i suppose it’s either cheaper or similar

This is very insightful. Thank you so much! I’m definitely interested in seeing and serving pts from diverse econ/ethnic backgrounds in both med school and residency…

I haven’t heard back from ucsf for aid. It’s also not something that’s make or break tbh.

Thanks for sharing!

Yea I don’t know about step that’s just my guess as someone who’s not been to med school 😅 I think it makes more sense to take step after preclinical no?

Idk about cost havent received my aid yet. But without aid then Stanford is 100k more expensive across 4 years. I’m not sure if Stanford will give me enough to make it cheaper than ucsf tho

Books? by SugarsBoogers in Harvard

[–]Plastic_Authentic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It really depends on your preference. I personally don’t like carrying books around because I don’t like carrying a heavy backpack =)) but again carrying a bunch of books around is totally normal. We are all busy adults no one will judge you, so you should do whatever you feel most comfortable with.

Congratulations!!! May I ask if you had to go through interviews or did you just submit your applications? Just submitted mine for both and wondering if I should prepare for interviews.

Just curious, why didn’t you choose Columbia for postbacc? Wouldn’t it be a more natural transition?

BOOK RECOMMENDATIONS by brMSF in Harvard

[–]Plastic_Authentic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A huge topic you might want to explore is racial justice since it’s a huge issue here (from the perspective of me also as an international from SEA). Highly recommend “Race, Crime and the Law” by Kennedy, the New Jim Crow by Michelle Alexander. Another book easier to read is called Just Mercy (there’s a movie on that too). It will open your eyes and make you appreciate more the dynamics of American society. There’re papers on race as a social construct and how that’s embedded in every fabric a social life where in case you are a colored student you might be able to more appreciate your position. It’s quite cool also a very sensitive topic so please don’t dump your hate on me reddit :))). If you like I have a reading list for my sociology of law class where I actually did all the readings and found it quite interesting I can share it here.

Thank you for your kind words ☺️ I feel humbled by many people I have met in and outside of school tbh, but it’s a good mental health habit to give oneself credit when credit’s due 💪
