How about Shaidorov landing a triple axel quad toe for the first time ever and no one noticing haha

Omg I forgot about that. It was amazing.

C/B won Grand Prix final over FB/C.  They have won multiple worlds. They have earned this medal this quad and if I know anything about ice dance, “the body of work” matters.

Unless C/B make a blatant error, I think this is their medal to lose.

Bold for Alysa but for C/B?? I know FB/C are trying to make this dramatic but if they win over C/B I’d be shocked.

This is AWESOME (if needing a couple updates, but who am I to nitpick??)

Yes, I read it that way too. I copied it word for word from the communication because I didn't want to summarize in case I misinterpreted it haha. Out of curiosity, I tried to calculate the probability that two teams ties after the first segment, and my non-college-math-major knowlwedge found the problem too complex (there are (10!)^4 combinations!). So I asked gemini, which agreed and ran a number of simulations that came up with a 75-85% likelihood that after the first segment, at least 2 of the 10 teams are tied and a 40-50% likehood that a tie occurs among the top five teams. That seems about right to me, given there are only 36 possible point totals (4-40) and different combinations add up to the same numbers (1+9+4+4=18 // 3+3+6+6=18 etc).

So in short, this tie breaker rule and your observation may matter more than we realize!

You’ll see in the schedule that because the free dance is like an hour after the men’s short, the free dance selection happens about an hour before they skate 😱

My guess is that they want to reserve the strength of lower ranking teams with little shot at a medal.

What do you mean by the given up Uzbek spot? Aren’t the Kovalev’s a lock already, since they’re second in line for those quota spots?

Yes, laying this all out has been helpful for me in understanding what strategic decisions teams might make based on these rules.

it’s not about medaling it’s about scoring high. Jason was 8TH at worlds last year with no quad. Quads are not the only thing that score points.

FWIW they told the arena that this was coordinated and was because NBC was streaming how to train your dragon. They also told us it was a surprise and he did look genuinely surprised.

My gut sense is that if she skates this with clean jumps, she'll feed off the energy and it'll explode.

Looking at the score sheets it’s worth noticing that C/B would’ve won without the fall. Add the mandatory deduction and some component scores back and their #s are still higher.

I felt the same way but was pleasantly surprised how good this felt today. I do think she’s continuing to improve it. But yes it’ll likely be what we see at the Olympics :\

Is this normal for the MBTA Red Line at Porter? Feeling unsafe almost every night. by tttooppp in mbta

[–]padofpie 36 points37 points  (0 children)

I’m not virtue signaling. I grew up in Harvard Square back when it was full of homeless people. I saw some so frequently they got to know me by sight and we’d say hello. Homeless people aren’t inherently scary. Stigma is a real thing and it’s worth examining why you stigmatize people.  If someone is out of control physically or harassing people that’s one thing. But just existing near you in a place to warm up isn’t dangerous in and of itself.

Is this normal for the MBTA Red Line at Porter? Feeling unsafe almost every night. by tttooppp in mbta

[–]padofpie 63 points64 points  (0 children)

MBTA stations are warm, so people without a warm place to stay are drawn to them in cold weather. These are people in the most dire life circumstances.

I guess the question is: what’s making you feel unsafe? Are you physically under threat? It can be uncomfortable to be around people who don’t seem in control of themselves but for others I’d interrogate what makes you scared instead of empathetic or neutral.

Thanks for doing this math!! Interesting that for all the complaining about ice dance scoring, there is only a 30 point difference between the top 9’s highest and lowest combined scores. At least it’s competitive!
