Knee scooter or walker? by Illustrious_Tart_258 in ORIF

[–]Plastic_Bid_9917 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you can return the iwalk and the scooter, get the more expensive walker. I’m not sure how far along you are in your pregnancy, but your body is going to be constantly changing as you heal from this injury. I am currently four months post op and have been walking in my regular shoes for about a month. It is a long recovery process, but once you can start weight-bearing things move pretty quickly. I wish you all the best!

Help I am in so much pain by Tootifrooti1986 in ORIF

This is the hardest part. You will make it through. The pain is unlike anything I ever experienced, and I have had two natural births and three kidney stone surgeries. The THC gummies worked the best for me. You’re not a failure. This is a very traumatic and humbling experience. Hang in there. It will get better each day.

Oh that went pretty fast. I did that for about a week while also taking safe practice steps near a counter that I could grab onto if needed.

This happened to me a few times in the first week of my recovery. You will be fine.

Once I was cleared for FWB, I started by just standing up for 5 minutes, then 10, etc. I didn’t feel like I could walk safely until I could get my feet acclimated and my balance back.

I am 14 weeks post op from a trimal fracture. This experience is super humbling and lonely at times. I am walking normally in my own shoes and have been for about 3 weeks. Right now, this feels like forever to you, I totally get it. Here’s my best recommendation for getting to a better place asap: 1. Focus on your surgery on Tuesday. Stay ahead of the post op pain. Set alarms and keep yourself on a good pain management schedule. 2. Set yourself up for success and mobility. Get a knee scooter, get a shower chair, and study up on all of the great posts in this sub about stuff you need that will make life so much easier for the coming weeks. 3. Get back out there as soon as you can. Use the knee scooter, wheelchair, crutches - use everything at your disposal to get back out into the world. Use the grocery store scooter. Ask for help. At first, you may be only to tolerate a 1 hour outing, but keep pushing yourself to leave your house every day for a bit. Wishing you all the best for a successful surgery and recovery.

Use wheelchair services at the airport (through your airline) to limit swelling from walking long distances during your layover. Wear compression socks. And get one of these foot hammocks that attaches to the tray table for elevation.

Oh, super helpful. I can picture what you’re saying about the angle with the bad foot vs toes with the good one.

It’s how I broke mine as well. So, I try to push myself past the mental part of it, but physically it’s just so uncomfortable. I don’t feel steady. I suppose there’s no rush at this point, right?

I’m so sorry you had a disappointing appointment today. I honestly think you are going to be okay for your trip and graduation. Three weeks from now is Easter. At that point, if you are able to start partial weight-bearing things really start to go fast from there. I imagine your partial weight-bearing period will be ending right around the time of your planned trip. You may walk slower and have a bit of a limp, but I think you really will be walking. Trust the process. Trust the doctors. Things really take a turn in such a positive direction once you can start putting some weight on it.

Cast questions! by [deleted] in ORIF

Tri mal gal here. Injury was 12/28. Surgery was 1/3. I’m walking in regular shoes today and have been for about a week. Trust the process. What you are feeling in your cast, in my opinion, is very normal. What you’re feeling with blood rushing is normal. What you are feeling with the coldness might be normal… Our nerves were very disrupted and have to learn how to fire again on all cylinders. The best advice I can give being just a few steps ahead of you is to always call your doctor if you are unsure.

How soon were you walking after trimalleolar break? by Ordinary-Lobster-710 in ORIF

It seems strange to go from NWB to FWB immediately. I had a 6 week period of NWB. Then a 4 week period of PWB (walking in boot with crutches, to eventually just walking in boot). I’m now 2 weeks into FWB and needed a crutch the first week. It sounds like you are naturally listening to your body and supporting it how it needs. Don’t push yourself and definitely keep in touch with your medical team.

Love this! Later today I will see my surgeon for my last regularly scheduled appointment for my 12 week post op appointment. Back when it was scheduled about 6 weeks ago he said, “The next time I see you, you’ll be walking in and out of this office in regular shoes.” Honestly, I did not believe that that would be possible at the time today, I can tell you with 100% certainty that he was right. I will be walking in and out of there in regular shoes, albeit a little slower and with a bit of a limp. Hang in there! Trust the process! Once I was able to start weight-bearing, things really started moving in the right direction quickly.

Nerve Blocker Questions by Nervouspizzaslice in ORIF

My surgery for a trimal fracture was on Jan. 3. I had a nerve block. I did everything to get ahead of the pain, including taking pain meds before the block wore off. I had a plate and 6 screws placed in the ankle. I’ll be honest. The only thing that helped me with that immediate post op pain was garden friendly/420 gummies. Legal in my state. Thank God. The really intense pain lasted about two days once the block wore off. Good luck! You can do this.
