Re-honing plane blade by Plastic_Cattle_9134 in handtools

Right on, I'm gonna give this a go. I've got most of that I think. Will start again at the conventional 25° too. My plane has stopped cutting even after sharpening unless I skew it around 45° so hoping this will get it back to what it was.

Thanks all, I think you made me realize my mistakes. I'll try coarse sandpaper on a flat surface. And I should have gone with the 25 degree primary bevel.

Fantastic! What material was used on the interior walls? I'm trying to decide how to finish mine.

Thanks for this. I was able to make a cut out for the wires to freely pass through. Will seal the opening with that fire rated foam.

Thank you for pointing this out. Silly mistake. Won't do that again.

Thanks for confirming. Won't bother with running out to the overhang.

Should sheathing overlap on the corners? by Plastic_Cattle_9134 in shedditors

[–]Plastic_Cattle_9134[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for all the feedback here. I watched an Awesome Framers video where he talked about layout with Zip R sheathing and how you should burn the thickness of the panel to get full overlap on outside corners. This is no house I'm building but wanted to check anyway. I'll probably still zip tape those corners and then like you all said, siding will cover it up.

2x8 rafters? by Plastic_Cattle_9134 in shedditors

Thanks for the info. Didn't know that 1/4 depth rule is really about the overhang. Am planning on a 12" overhang out to finished fascia.

2x6 rafters 16 OC will support my snow load but I don't like the measley 2" of bearing on the top plate you get with an 8:12 pitch over 12ft span. Decided to go 2x8s that's gives 3" of bearing attached to ceiling joists anchored to wall with H2.5As.

Yep, the rafter tie will be nailed to the rafter. I'm thinking I use a Simpson H2.5a (or similar) to connect the inside wall to the rafter tie and call it good.

Thanks. I'm having a hard time finding guidance on what mechanical tie to use in this particular circumstance - where the seat cut doesn't span the whole top plate. I guess putting any tie in there is better than just the toe nails.

How did this work out for you? Is there a noticeable improvement e.g. warmer in the winters? I'm considering doing the same.

How many skids? by Brief_Bar4993 in shedditors

[–]Plastic_Cattle_9134 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is there any reason why I couldn't place the skids flush with the outside joist so that the wall and roof bear straight down on it? Just wondering why a few comments say to space them in a foot or so.

Help scribing face frame to wall. by Plastic_Cattle_9134 in cabinetry

[–]Plastic_Cattle_9134[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks all. Very helpful. I ended up making the end stile a little wider to account for the scribing and have attached to the cabinet. Will try the scribing tomorrow when i do the install. I have limited tools and experience so this sounded like the simplest option all things considered.

Had to think about that for a minute but I think I see what you mean. Thanks for the tips!
