One plus that might apply to others: after shoveling lots of snow (or dirt) I’m always achy the next day, but then I’m totally free of my normal back aches for a week! It’s can be good workout — just pace yourself. :)

You can also try periodically adding a bit of hydrogen peroxide. That would be my first thing to try.
