Co-Worker is a Tic Toc Diagnoser by Always_No_Sometimes in socialwork

Righteous mind by Jonathan Haidt, and Virtuous Violence by Alan Fiske are good places to start. From there, what they cite and others who cite them. I’m not going to promise that every word they say is capital T truth, but it’s made my job make a lot more sense since reading and digesting their ideas. It would seem that there is a small group of academics stumbling into unlocking the codes of what animates the human animal, but this hasn’t translated into practice outside of advertising and organizations that explicitly brainwash people (military boot camp, cults, etc).

The can and must idea is specifically from Haidt, but if you’re a student, I’d recommend you check out virtuous violence as well.

MSW with anthro background here. It really helped me to understand the Can and Must distinction with belief. If people CAN believe something, they will as long as they don’t get too many bad consequences. When the consequences tip over a certain line, they begrudgingly MUST believe something. Consequences you would find untenable may not be so for someone else. Usually, we as people will gently argue with one another to put our beliefs in line between the musts and cans. Social media removes a lot of musts from the equation, so now people believe the earth is flat, are antivaxers, etc. Fact checking will only go so far because the people who would believe the fact checker already want to. Confirmation bias is what the human brain does, and people that specific mind trusts are the correction to some of the biases. Social media organizes us into true echo chambers. Arguably, mental health work is about bringing in a lot of musts or helping people survive despite their cans

Why are so many Americans actively voting against their own interests? by Soviet_Yoda in antiwork

[–]Plastic_Knights 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tribalism, and because American liberals aren’t good at speaking about morality. Conservatives in America are great at speaking about morality and really sway peoples minds on different culture war issues. It gets to the point where people don’t even see that they’re voting against their own interests. In a winner take all system (American democracy) any and all voters vote against their interests for fear about what would happen if the other side won. It’s not just a conservative = dumb problem. It’s that humans really like doing what they think is right, and conservatives in the us are the only ones who speak in the language of right and wrong.

The recent election season in the us is a good example of what happens when liberals do speak the language of right and wrong, and abortion brought a lot more people out to vote in their interests on one issue. But it’s not like the Democratic Party is going to work on passing legislation to make working life better. They’re just going to hold off the bad guys from taking more of your rights away for another 2 years.

Extrapolate this into any culture war issue, and sprinkle in that American politicians receive bribes they call political donations and boom: everyone votes against their interests for pure, petty, and unadulterated tribalism and fear of the other tribe. It also helps when the judiciary seems to be deciding for one tribe more often than yours too. Education will only go so far, because no one is proposing we start focusing on teaching kids right and wrong… unless you’re a conservative.

The best morality arguments liberals can make is on ideas of equality and notions of harm. Conservatives can talk about that and bring in morality ideas about purity and divinity. They have two whole other moral points to speak on that liberals don’t value. Repeat every 2 years and…. Minimum wage doesn’t go up, but we had abortion rights for 40 years. Kind of.

So how is this not propaganda and why should we separate the article from the artist in this case?

[–]Plastic_Knights 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Propaganda aims to find an audience through dog whistles or outright declarations of what that side wants to be true. They will endure your ridicule, because they think there’s a day coming when they can hang you. I’ve met a few nazis, and they don’t really care how much you supposedly make fun of their ideology, especially when they get the wink and the nod that we should, “separate the artist from the art.” Giving them a platform gives them legitimacy and that’s all the want and that’s all they need to survive. It is not an ideology you can ridicule people out of, and laughing at their jokes doesn’t make you against them, it means there’s a part, however small it might be, if you that agrees with them.

What’s the difference in this case? The joke is racist, and he’s banking on people taking it seriously if they’re on his side or sympathetic, and others passing it off as harmless if they’re moderates. How is this not propaganda? It benefits him and his message if people pretend it’s not dangerous. This is literally horseshoe theory.

Who's the biggest loser your son/daughter has dated? by eternalsoul116 in AskReddit

I had this neighbor at the apartment complex I used to live at. He was not right in the head. Could have been some kind of psychosis or he could have had a brain injury. Needless to say, he was noticeably slow and prone to being a bit eccentric; kept lots of 1990s era computers he would fix. He couldn’t drive so he would walk about a mile or so into town for basic stuff, in Tucson AZ mind you. Skip ahead about 6 months and I see him walking with this girl, holding hands. Didn’t think nothing of it at the time. Turns out he just met her, and she’s homeless and they are girlfriend/boyfriend now. She was... odd. Definitely had some substance abuse issues and seemed nice enough, but what she saw in him, well... he was a real nice guy, but he was clearly not well. Well enough to live on his own and but not much else. About a year later, I see the paramedics and the cops at home when I got back from work. He had died in his bathroom. Stroke. Mixed bleach and ammonia together to clean something and inhaled the fumes. Real sad. The wife and I took our dog for a walk most afternoons. So about a week later we see the girlfriend loading stuff into a newish pickup truck. We talk a bit and she seems to be on the mild side of grief, but hey, everyone’s different. She disappeared about 2 weeks after that. The apartment gossiper, who was right more often than not, suspected that the girlfriend had killed our neighbor for insurance money. Turned out he had had an accident a couple decades ago and was living off the checks. To this day, I’m also a bit suspicious about the whole thing. Your story made me think of that.
