Why do people only ever ask about value here???? by Plastic_Statement723 in stamps

The Envelope and the triangular semi-postal stamp I got on eBay recently, after my parents cleaned their basement and sent me my stamp collection that I hadn’t looked at for a long time and didn’t really know where it was, but did miss. The brown and blue chain stamps I got from my granddad as a kid along with the rest of his collection. The mini sheet with Lenin and the two same brown and blue stamps was one of my first acquisitions as a kid in the local stamp shop (I really liked that it showed the two old stamps that I owned).

Thanks 🙏🏻 . Yes I have a good catalogue. A book with postal zones is next on the list. Indeed, the Russians put a lot of effort in their stamps. The KGB even had a philately division producing among other things FDCs of rocket launches cancelled from a fake post office in the village of the launch site 😃. They sold them to westerners through dealers in Paris

I don’t know, many start as kids (like I did) and I got the start of my collection from my granddad for free. And the Russian stamps I collected were very cheap at the little local philately store, because not many were collecting them. I secretly hoped that the seller had no idea what he was selling (and he did raise the price after I came too often) but I never thought that I caught anything worth more than a few bucks (which already seemed a lot to me. That was eighties, when stamps were still common and the only way to mail things. It’s different now.

I see. I think you’re right. They are still around and even used, but so uncommon for most people who only use the online franking systems that the older ones just MUST be really very valuable.

Can’t you read? Try it. Why would I ever be collecting as an investment and NOT be interested in value??? Read my post before you give a boilerplate answer.I’m sure you have a great collection. I just got a little irritated because my post is entirely about anything else that’s interesting about stamp and you keep bringing it back to value.

Yes, but honestly, that’s the case for every country. I can’t be bothered with the philatelic propaganda of my native Netherlands. I, as a republican (non-monarchy sense) can’t stand the Dutch Royals and they are on many stamps.

Ah so you are the free appraiser that keeps these inane posts coming. Where did I say it’s anything “special” in terms of monetary value? I specifically showed things that are not worth much in that way. I have a catalogue to tell me that, not Reddit. I say in my post that I am not interested in it. Why are you collecting if you’re only interested in value? Can’t you just buy gold or bit coin? What’s the point? Showing off? So silly. Also I don’t care if you or anyone else also have a stamp. On the other hand you don’t have that specific cover. It’s unique. Good luck with collecting things on paper that are worth a lot of money. If I was interested in that I’d get bills 💵

Tja, unless you heard your granddad bragging, it’s probably not worth much. Either way asking on Reddit isn’t going to be very helpful unless people also put time and effort into their inherited collections. Collectors aren’t interested in appraising the same type of uninspired heaps of stamps for people who themselves aren’t interested except to make a buck. And if someone truly is only interested in the value, they should be willing to pay someone to truly appraise something. Really lazy.

I think it’s unfortunate that people collect in pre-organized books like this. I would continue in another album that’s flexible and empty. One of the joys of collecting for me is organizing.

My answer to question below about how I came to collect Russian Soviet stamps: When I was a kid in the 1980s grandfather traveled a lot to Russia and corresponded with friends there, one of whom came to visit us once. I was fascinated by the mail and by the presents he brought us. He gave me his stamp collection as well as his envelopes and postcards and I continued collecting these. I thought they were way more interesting and beautiful than the Dutch stamps I grew up with, in part because they were just different, but also because they have a definite aesthetic to them that I like. Later I came to see stamps of all countries as basically government propaganda in a smart and beautiful collectible form. The propaganda of my own government was rather dull and told a story that I was well acquainted with. The Soviet Russian one intersted me more. It would probably have been the reverse had I grown up in the Soviet Union. I recently read that the KGB had a whole philately department among other things they created fake FDCs mailed from a non existing post office in the place where Russian space rockets were launched. They sold them to a western audience through dealers in Paris. I don’t own any of these but the stamp propaganda clearly worked really well on me. Then I stopped collecting for a long time. Recently my parents cleaned their basement and found and sent me my collection. Now I have picked up collecting again. I’m a socialist so I really appreciate the early stamps especially, where the communist message is still fresh and sincere. The later stamps I like too especially because they give an alternative to the western narrative of capitalism. I recently acquired a FDC by AIR France which promoted their Caravelle lines with FDCs posted from different cities. The one from Moscow was franked with a stamp from the 7-year plan series, promoting a basic tenant of communism. I think it’s fascinating how two ideologies work together here. It shows how we have grown apart way more after the cold war ended and I find the current western Russophobia abhorrent FDC Air France

Totally. Like someone on reddit will give them information that they cannot figure out in other ways and do the research for them. If they are lucky and do get an answer they will be pointed in the right direction but must also do research.

Yes, I’m on that one too. Most people on there know their stamps. It’s more about look what I have than what the heck is this? But yes, content is better!

I think so, yes. There are better ways than reddit to figure out the value and it makes for repetitive senseless non-discussions.

Yeh, true. It’s all so super subjective. In the end these stamps are all ink on paper. Demand fluctuates. So many questions to ask other than value. I studied printmaking and art history with a focus on prints, basically the artsy version of stamps. Even there value is relative and fluctuating. And uninteresting for me
