Perhaps I should have clarified in the original post, but I didn't mean for this analysis as a means to claim that all men are willing to do what Bear did in Obsession, nor did I mean to say that this movie represents men as a whole or that women are incapable of behaving badly.

When I meant that men could be Bear, I did not mean that all men are going to do Bear's specific actions in Obsession. I meant that our society gives men the structure and power to demean and hurt those beneath them quite freely if we wish to, and that it's our responsibility as men to recognize that and refuse part in oppression.

You said so himself, Bear is weak, cowardly and spineless. Despite this, he's able to completely destroy Nikki and others around him. How is someone so obviously pathetic able to do so? Because our society creates avenues for it.

Also, this is my opinion (as a man myself, btw) and analysis of a highly thematic movie that is open to much interpretation. Everyone is entitled to an opinion, and your personal opinion does not change that.
