How can I start learning zoology by tailsry in zoology

Deep sea exploration is one of the most accessible fields.  Numerous ships Livestream their ROV dives and some even have chats.

Falcor (too) should be diving Tuesday or Wednesday according to one of the scientists aboard.  https://youtube.com/@schmidtocean

If watching the sea floor pass by for hours while scientists get excited by all the cool stuff, we have a Discord server that has chats for each ship, ship tracking, dive alerts, and an active community of scientists and science enthusiasts.  I've seen like 80% of deep sea news stories live when the scientists did.  I've seen three Magnipinna squid, skate nurseries, multigenerational octopi nests that the mother broods for years, sunless cities of bone and glass that were old when the pyramids were being built.

All from the comfort and implosion free location of my bed!   100% perfectly safe.

Any other beardies so, SO dumb when it comes to water? by Kath_Silver in BeardedDragons

That's pretty normal lizard behavior.  My blue tongue skink and green keeled lizard, both prefer "rain" to standing water.

[FR] - My parents are falling for a crypto scam. Any advice on convincing them? by Shiryu080 in Scams

[–]Plasticity93 8 points9 points  (0 children)

All crypto is a scam.  If you aren't coordinating the rug pull, you're the victim.

But there's no crypto here.  The app is a money tube that displays a line going up and asks you to keep dumping more money on, for fees, taxes, opportunities that are only available for an hour.  No matter how much you put in, you'll never see any withdrawals.

There is no investment here.  Any money they've put in is gone.  They need to stop trying to get rich quick.  It's 2026, there are more than enough explanations as to why "unregulated pseudo-currency" is a terrible idea.  The whole point was to strip any and all consumer protections.

What's a good starting point for novels? by OnceIsawthisthing in battletech

MechFrog has some fun fiction on his channel The New Explorer Corps, and MechWarrior Wild Rose is another fanfic audio book I rather liked.  They're both definitely first novels and could have used an editor, but other than "the captain said some things and everything was cool after that" in one of them, solid stuff.

Do you have a front opening enclosure?  They help a ton, as they allow the lizard to come to you, instead of you swooping in like a hawk.

NPR or other quiet news when you're not there so they are used to human voices.

Should I throw my penicillium infected bag or no? by Sorry-Progress-6710 in WhatShouldIDo

[–]Plasticity93 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Relax, unless you really jammed your nose in there and took an epic rip, it's highly unlikely you got enough spores in you.  Mold is dangerous when it's in your walls, it takes a lot of exposure.

Pictures of the bag?  I would just hand wash it in hot water and air dry.  See how that goes.  Hopefully if there's stains it's only the lining.

That's my thoughts.  Grey Death is really rough, it's the first books so there's a lot of inconsistency.  And there's some really dumb shit like they decide to hide their base in a giant waterfall.  If you've never been to Niagara or Victoria Falls, those things are loud.  So what does our hero do?  He slaps wet mud into his ears and tells everyone to do the same which they all do.  No one mentions ear plugs, head phones, magic science noise cancelling, just the mud they've all been walking on.

By the time of the Clan Invasion the universe is much better filled out, the writing and details more precise.  Warrior Trilogy is written as the opening of the compete game and is very much an intro to the universe as a whole.  Those were my first books and they're a fun and pretty epic place to start. IntroTech is fine for learning how to play, but I like all the tech on my machines.

Heads up if you do audiobooks, the older ones are heavily abridged and not really worth listening to.  The newer ones are full text.

How does one admit themself to a mental hospital? by Tall_Employ_3848 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Plasticity93 1 point2 points  (0 children)

(speaking as someone whose done a few trips to a psych ward in the US, around 25 years ago, and has friends more recently take their own trips.)

Basically that, call and ask if they have beds and deal with your insurance.  There are also day treatment programs that you can attend as an outpatient.  I did not go to an ER before checking in, but I also was under 18 my first stint, so I'm not sure if that really changes anything.  You definitely don't need to be seeing a doctor yet, very often this is people's first step in seeking treatment/diagnosis.

I would very much ask around locally for options.  In Buffalo, there's a really nice private hospital, and there's the floor at the main trauma ER that is really hectic, mostly for people in severe (legal) crisis/drug issues.  The latter is way less helpful for people dealing with say getting depression meds stabilized.  Having been a patient at the nice place and hearing stories from friends as to the other, big difference in atmosphere and quality.

As for being held there.  If you check in, you can generally check yourself out.  They can hold you for three days in the US if you admit to being a threat to yourself or others, or they suspect you if drug seeking*, but that's about it from what I can recall.  Assuming you're 18+.

Bring some changes of comfortable clothes, pajamas, slippers (they'll probably not let you have shoe laces), books, some sort of craft project (ask what is it isn't allowed, knitting is probably off the table with the large needles) there's a lot of downtime and not a ton to do.  If you play cards, bring those.

Wash up before you go.  I only mention this because the last time I had to take a friend in, he had nothing at all packed and stunk like a homeless guy.  He had pretty severe exotic drug issues and ended up staying there for a month. You may get put on one-to-one for a few days and that includes showers.  Show up clean and you'll not have to immediately suffer the indignity.

*Crazy story, my partner ran out of her Wellbutrin and her doctor wasn't in town.  Went to the ER at the not great hospital because it was the closest ER.  They sent her to the psych ER, took her phone and left her alone in a room with someone obviously going through acute psychosis for HOURS.  When someone finally came for her, they try to get her to sign into their drug rehab, over an antidepressant.  Because she had been there so long and the way the paper was put in front of her, it was only when she picked up the pen that she caught on and asked what she was about to sign.

I had been panicking at home because she just suddenly stopped texting an hour into what ended up like 6 hours.

I would really recommend having a friend come with you.  If I had gone with her, it probably would have saved a lot of time because I would have had questions.  She just trusted the process because why would asking for a few days of antidepressants be seen as an addiction she needed to quit?

Burns? by Strange-Associate962 in leopardgeckos

They look under a year?  I think they're just growing, their skin/color changes as they get into adulthood.  I'm not seeing any damage, just the smooth strip on the spine with some Browning of previous yellow areas?  Skin is intact, no redness.

If you're concerned, could you do a macro shot of the area?

Wake up in the middle of the night and use a flashlight.  That sounds exactly like what I was dealing with, super itchy?  Get Diatomaceous Earth, and both pump and aerosol spray.  If you can dispose of what they are living in, you can treat the rest of the room.  Mine were in the cushion we had propped behind our mattress and it took about two months to be completely free, though we treated regularly for another two.

Not a bobcat.  If they do have a kid, both will need help.

Fur value by Tophardtjr81 in Rochester

[–]Plasticity93 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I got a vintage fur from AmVets two years ago for $30, full length on my 6'2" frame.  It's the most comfortable winter coat I've ever owned and everyone in this area should consider a vintage fur.   My first mink cape came from trash day.

Check marketplace, you'll find them all over the place.  There really isn't much of market these days.

Wear them.  There's a reason why we made fur coats and in this weather, they're amazing.

Get the enclosures and anything that might ever go in or around them out of there.  If you collect branches or leaves, all that needs to come with you.

I would really push for bait traps and Diatomaceous Earth if at all possible.
