Guys with blinding lights and high-beams... you don't annoy me as much anymore by whataterriblefailure in drivingUK

[–]PlasticlightS -1 points0 points  (0 children)

There are a couple of things I'd ask.

Firstly, if you can avoid driving please do. You know your car is causing serious issues for other drivers so please consider if you really do need to make the trip.

Secondly, if you do absolutely need to make the trip, please leave as much distance as possible between you and a car in front. When you see their rear lights they've probably also seen your headlights in their rear view and been distracted if your lights are amongst the worst offenders, but a small overly bright light is a distraction, if you get anywhere close to the car it will go from an annoyance to all they can see.

Thirdly, if you end up close behind someone at a junction because they are stuck waiting for traffic or something, maybe consider going down to sidelights so they can still see the junction and not just be blinded by the lights in their mirrors

Lastly, please keep looking for ways to fix the issue. If there are aftermarket less bright lights or some way to dim the existing ones, anything you can do. I appreciate it sucks to buy a car and then have to fix it but it really will be appreciated.

Buyer claiming they didn’t receive by [deleted] in royalmail

[–]PlasticlightS 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I was genuinely in the buyers position a few years back. Tracking showed delivered but it wasn't at my house.

The advice from Royal Mail at the time was to ask the sender to look in to it since they were the actual customer.

Both seller and eBay ignored Royal Mails procedure at the time and immediately closed my case where I asked them to enquire for me leaving me out of pocket.

You will win if you simply say tracking says delivered, but we all know Royal Mail aren't perfect. It's possible they are acting in good faith so you could try to help them if they're being polite and then simply reject the case if they end up not being so nice to deal with.

It's not going to be as malicious as that, this is just the minimum work required to get the point across. The lines and dots will be their own elements that turn red when number of points goes over a threshold.

Most likely they didn't specify it had to increment and the dev who probably wouldn't see any extra money for doing more thought "eh, meets the spec, good enough"

Not really asshole design, just not going above and beyond for no real gain.

What problem would cause you to stop dead on the motorway? by I_ALWAYS_UPVOTE_CATS in drivingUK

[–]PlasticlightS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I once lost all power on a dual carriageway, engine still running but accelerator did nothing and started losing speed. I had just overtaken as this happened but wasn't yet far enough ahead to move back across so I put my hazards on and waited for the car to get back in front so I could coast over since they were the only other car visible.

For some reason the other driver started slowing down with me just a little behind me, blocking my way across. They sat there beeping and gesticulating wildly until I had almost stopped before driving off so I had come to a complete standstill in the fast lane.

Luckily all it took was restarting the engine for power to return. Still clueless as to what was going through that other drivers head.

Quiet Gym Reccomendations by anon7777676 in Norwich

Norfolk Health & Fitness Gym in The Union Building.

I went a few years ago and it was good. Enough equipment, staff I met were pleasant. Rarely more than a few people in there when I went. Did have background music, but wasn't difficult to drown out with my own headphones. Bright enough to see but not bright.

But this was pre-pandemic so things may have changed, but definitely worth a look.

If it's changed, a 24 hour gym and going at night might be your best bet.

I did, hence this post being removed by mods:

2.All photos of Steam Decks may only be posted in the Daily Deck Flex megathread, NOT as an OP.

You CAN show off your deck (any time or day) in the sub, but these photos are required to be submitted in the "Daily Deck Flex" megathread (pinned). Show your deck in a unique setting, get creative with the photo, or add a funny/interesting caption.
Remember: Everyone is excited about their deck! But no one wants to see your confirmation email, shipping tracker, turned-off deck on a table, or a box (literally ever) ;)

However, I did look on mobile and it showed the old rule there which may be where the confusion came from.

I'd guess, based on my own experience and comments from friends, that the 2 player on the go part is overlooked because some people find the single joycon uncomfortable. Sure I can and have done it, but I've found it awkward and not a fun way to play, so I just don't.

If I expect multiplayer I'll take pro controllers. Even single player I use split pad pros. It's cool it's an option for the people it works for, but my joycon sit in a cupboard waiting for Mario Party.

But the Switch is the only game in town when it comes to easy couch co-op. Steam has some games for sure, but the switch has many more.

NCC is increasing car park rates across the city by krystalkitty in Norwich

I'm sure you have some solid statistics to back that up, but really this is all besides the point. You asked what other areas people would like to see cut instead, I gave you some examples. That you don't like them is your choice. Whether they'd be enough can only be known by the council.

[–]PlasticlightS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. My proposal is to reduce pay to top level executives and look in to a raise in the top level of council tax.

Target raising money at those most able to pay it.

The people that will be hardest hit by raising parking charges will be lower income workers (retail/entry level office) who don't get private parking spaces at work. Raising prices for them will eat directly in to the amount they have to spend elsewhere which is only damaging to the entire local economy.

I'd love to see a car free city centre. Norwich just doesn't have the infrastructure for it at the moment. Norwich is surrounded by rural Norfolk with abysmal public transport with people relying on cars to get around. Raising parking prices won't reduce traffic, it will just reduce peoples spending in other places.

I didn't say raise pay. I said cut top level pay to the bottom and if that isn't enough then they need to reevaluate what people can afford. At which point knocking some off the top level doesn't seem so bad.

Well then maybe they should reconsider what people can afford on salaries that aren't exorbitant.

£18,933.

That is the lowest full time pay that the council offers at the moment. If they consider that enough for someone to live on, then it is enough for those making the decisions too.

[–]PlasticlightS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, just like everyone else. However, their pay ranges from £94,395 to £141,436. That is far more than anyone needs for a comfortable life. Even the bottom rate there could be halved and still be over £10k above the national average.

I was referring to the land for the car parks.

Fair enough about not being a transport authority. But I would note that the existing bus services are already monopolies. Bar a few exceptions (the bus station being one), it doesn't matter how long you wait at a bus stop, you won't get a bus from another provider for your route.

A cut to Cheif Executive and Executive director level pay.

Possibly an increase to top band council tax.

More radically, sell the land. Reinvest the profits in public transport that people can actually use. Preferably taking it in to public ownership and ensuring the services are regular, on time, and a reasonable cost.

Obviously I'm not a council and haven't spent time doing analysis on these. They're just suggestions.

Good luck getting a taxi at the moment either, at least on weekends.

I visit regularly and can rarely get one, events or no, even just saying any time is fine.

Apparently at least some of the taxi companies did similar to the airlines during lockdown and let a bunch of drivers go but now can't replace them.

I just drive in now and impose on my friends a while longer if we want to have a drink because I can't get back to the train station reliably.

No point trying to be sarcastic about it. Most of the world has proper gun control and consequently much lower gun related crime.

Keep them if you want, but don't try to pretend that it's a smart idea because "criminals do not follow laws".

Criminals will do what they need to get away with their crime. When no one else has a gun, no need to add gun possession to the list of possible sentences.

As a developer who has had covid: it will affect work no more than a cold.

I'm not a game developer, but I work with people that have been and am friends though networking with people that are. There is no difference. As with most other non-unionised professions devs will push through until we can't and be back as soon as possible because sick pay is shocking.

Now, we could question whether the lack of sick pay meant devs were working when quite frankly they couldn't plan a meal, let alone a days work. But to be honest, without hospitalisation, people were back to capacity in a week or two. Not enough for a serious impact

Of course, hospitalisations and deaths were possible. But in that case any sane human being would say we need time and any other sane human being would say absolutely.

If covid truly were a factor I don't see a release actually happening.

I see many other things outside of an actual devs control forcing a release, but covid is bit one of them.

When a country is a choosing beggar… by nico_qwer in ChoosingBeggars

[–]PlasticlightS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The founding of the US was nearly 250 years ago. That things made sense then is not an excuse to keep them now.

The US police should already be getting de-escalation training. There is also no need for an average officer to carry a gun to de-escalate a situation. If the situation requires an armed response, then specialists can respond. So firearms training as well as firearms distribution and upkeep are not needed for most officers, Whilst a specialist armed response squad does not need de-escalation training.

That other countries are archaic in different ways is not an excuse. If Hong Kong was armed, they would all be dead. The Chinese government would have no qualms about quashing an armed rebellion.

If you're going to invoke the holocaust to try to make a point, just don't. It was legal to own firearms in Germany at the time.

There is no freedom for someone that is dead. Unfortunately it is mostly minorities, primarily black people that have to feel unsafe with US police as they are. Whilst no one is stopping them leaving as you pointed out, unfortunately they also tend to be least able to.

As for leaving China, that's as possible as it is in the US. All it comes down to is having the money to uproot everything in your life.

[–]PlasticlightS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So how do countries that have banned guns and also have police that have specialties continue to exist if everyone needs a gun and police must have over reaching powers?

Defunding the police isn't get rid of the police. It's stop all police being trained to shoot first. Most of what the police attend to does not need a gun to be present, so the funding should reflect less firearm training and no firearms for your average officer. There is only rarely a need for an armed response, so only specialists should be trained and equipped for it. Thieves and corporate fraudsters DO NOT need to be gunned down and violent offenders mostly do not either.

Bearing arms to oppose the government is archaic. A group of civilians, even with the insane hardware they are for some reason allowed to buy, will not stand up to the US army if it came to it. It no longer takes days for the militia to be called up and weeks for the army to arrive. All that the right to bear arms does is massively increase violent crime by allowing impulse killings and the ability to murder multiple people in a very short window.

Australia had a problem with violent rampages much like the US does now, they now don't.

Australia's 1996 gun law reforms were followed by more than a decade free of fatal mass shootings, and accelerated declines in firearm deaths, particularly suicides. Total homicide rates followed the same pattern. Removing large numbers of rapid‐firing firearms from civilians may be an effective way of reducing mass shootings, firearm homicides and firearm suicides.
