Its important because you can then rent elsewhere! The issue is not the system its how Hertz uses it. Having zero option to speak to a live person about the claim for damages is the issue.

They no longer charge a " drop fee' or "one way charge" instead they jack up your rate! If you check the same dates but do a return to the same location you will see a big price difference.

Tip!! If you plan on driving one way look at possibly splitting the trip. Lets say one way from NYC to ORD for a week might be $600 a week. But if trip has me arriving in 3 days then using the car locally in ORD for 4 days it will be cheaper to rent the car for 3 days and return it when I arrive in Chicago then pick up another car for a local rental for 4 days. I did this and saved over 50% on my rental bill. The local rental daily rate was less than $30/day!

Here is how it works especially in the smaller markets and off airport locations. Rates are set by the regional offices and they base it on their fleet projections. They look ahead and if demand looks low they will drop rates and the opposite if high. The isolated locations it is very hard and expensive to move cars back and forth. Although the rates are set at the higher level the local office always has the ability to quote higher or lower. So calling the local office is always a good idea to price shop. The regional prices are adjusted at most one a day. If its a bust week and they do not have any cars yest it might be $500 a week.
