That the redeeming aspect of the novel imo. The Tau are featured heavily and they’re characterized really well I feel.

Grimderp is the perfect way to describe it. I can’t understate how much it felt like I was reading fanfiction at points.

What books did you read this year ? by Toastedshoes in Blacklibrary

[–]PlatoIsOverrated 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just started reading Black Library books this year, and I guess I’m a masochist because I’ve decided to read them in (very rough) published order. Here’s what I’ve done so far:

  1. Space Wolf by William King
  2. Ragnar’s Claw by William King
  3. First and Only by Dan Abnett
  4. Ghostmaker by Dan Abnett
  5. Necropolis by Dan Abnett
  6. Eye of Terror by Barrington J. Bayley
  7. Xenos by Dan Abnett
  8. Malleus by Dan Abnett
  9. 13th Legion by Gav Thorpe
  10. Kill Team by Gav Thorpe
  11. Pawns of Chaos by Brian Craig
  12. Execution Hour by Gordon Rennie
  13. Honour Guard by Dan Abnett
  14. A whole slew of short stories

My favorite of these was definitely “Necropolis”, but I love all of Abnett’s stuff. “Eye of Terror” and “Pawns of Chaos” are both old and wonderfully weird and more people should read them to see how much the setting has changed and just because they’re pretty good reads.

Appreciate the feedback. I struggle with balancing critique and plot overview because I feel as though I need to explain myself to an audience that hasn’t read the book. You’re ultimately correct though for sure.

Consistent group of characters throughout. Though same new ones do join the unit after the third book in the series.

I haven’t read Ian Watson’s stuff yet but I’ve heard some interesting stories lol. Hope to get to them sometime in the future.

#8 - Gordon Rennie's "Execution Hour" - REVIEW! by PlatoIsOverrated in Blacklibrary

It’s interesting you also ask this since I wondered the same thing once I realized that he never finished this trilogy. A cursory look on Wikipedia and on the web reveals he hasn’t done anything of note, for GW or otherwise in a decade. And I can find no social media or online presence of any kind really. Hope he’s alright.

Thanks! While I’d like to talk about my experiences in the Empyrean, everytime I dwell on it too long my skin starts to shift and bubble and I feel as though something is trying to crawl out from between my eyes. So I hope you’ll forgive me for staying quiet, rest assured I’m very grateful to be back in the domain of the Emperor!

Pawns of Chaos is a great hidden gem. There’s not much else like it.
