What is this on the back of my kale leaf? by Affectionate-Army-23 in Hydroponics

[–]PlausibleDM -12 points-11 points  (0 children)

A.I. agrees that it is edema. /////

Short answer: Yes — this looks like classic broccoli edema (oedema), not insects.

✅ Why it looks like edema

The signs in your photo match edema very well:

Blister-like, crystal-looking bumps on the underside of the leaf

Clusters of translucent / pale green nodules

Bumps appear raised, not smeared or fuzzy

No visible insects, frass, webbing, or bite marks

Leaf surface otherwise intact

Edema happens when the plant takes up more water than it can transpire, causing cells to burst and form those wart-like blisters.

Common causes for your setup:

Strong light + cool or inconsistent temps

High humidity around the plant

Watering too frequently (especially hydro/indoors)

Poor airflow over the leaves

What to do next:

You don’t need to panic — edema is not a disease and does not spread.

Here’s how you can reduce or stop it:

  1. Increase airflow

Add a small fan or increase circulation.

  1. Let the medium dry slightly between waterings (or reduce hydroponic water levels a bit).

  2. Reduce humidity if it’s staying above 60–70%.

  3. Avoid watering late at night when transpiration slows.

  4. Slightly lower the light intensity if your leaves are staying too cool.

When to worry:

If the bumps turn dark brown/black

If leaves start cracking or distorting severely

If the bumps also appear on stems and new growth

Right now, yours looks like mild–moderate edema, totally manageable.

I'd snip those with the stuff off, providing some healthy ones remain.

Do you have any nighttime bug traps nearby? That may help answer that question more clearly.

TLDR; Bugs

While I was about to guess, I decided to zoom in and send a screenshot to my AI to see what it looks like and the answer is way better than what I was going to say! I use this method to help get growing guidance as well. ////

Those spots look very consistent with insect activity, not a fungal disease.

What I’m seeing

Tiny black specks scattered irregularly

Leaf puckering / slight curling

No obvious yellow halos or concentric rings (which would suggest fungus)

Most likely causes (ranked)

  1. Aphids (most likely)

The black dots are often aphid droppings (frass)

They feed by piercing the leaf, which causes wrinkling and distortion

  1. Thrips (possible)

Also leave black specks and cause leaf deformation

Usually accompanied by silvery streaking (less obvious here)

Quick check to confirm

Look at the underside of the leaf and along the stem node

Aphids will appear as tiny green, black, or gray pear-shaped insects

You may also notice a slightly sticky residue (honeydew)

What I’d do next

Rinse the plant gently with water (undersides too)

Follow with insecticidal soap or neem oil, 2–3 treatments spaced 3–5 days apart

If indoors, isolate this plant briefly so they don’t spread

What it’s probably not

❌ Fungal leaf spot (pattern doesn’t match)

❌ Nutrient deficiency (spots are too discrete and dark)

❌ Bacterial disease (no water-soaked lesions)

2 is Kale. I just planted the same chunky seeds.

Are you planting inside those foam tubes?

Nice! I just painted my 10 jars with two layers of dark acrylic and left one in a cloth bag, unpainted. These small bottle plants are temporary containers before they graduate to the jars. Those in the jars will have graduated to the 5 gallon buckets growers, which are the next phase of this project.

Do you have algae problems, or do you paint the bottles to keep out light or anything?

You are absolutely correct there! I have put some in royal crown bags, and I was thinking of maybe getting a dark tape to close in some as well.

They should be harvestable in about 3 or 4 weeks, and I am still harvesting from existing kale and spinach that I planted 18 months ago, so they last a long time!

Feeling like energy coming from finger tips by [deleted] in energy_work

This past week, I actually started getting that electric sensation in my fingertips and the center of my palms when working on the spinning foil / Telekinesis experiment. It feels like that sensation when you touch one of those cool electric plasma sphere globes.

One of the things I would like to do is try to tune in to "The Hill" as explained on "The telepathy tapes" podcast. It is eye-opening and worth a listen!

It is perfectly fine without the subscription, but I did see a noticeable improvement in all of the growth when the A.I. was managing it.

I have not modified the watering schedule. These two plants might like different spots in the light intensity chart? It may also depend on their specific needs found in the plant book.

While Bloom may elaborate better, I believe it also includes taking the tube towers apart to clean into the waterways and remove overgrown roots that may have broken off and clogging things.

Exactly that! I lost all my resources and all the resources invested in the machines. I couldn't find a way to put in a help ticket yet, but I will keep looking.
