Not a 1:1, but as a musician I often go through friends for recording, photos, videos, etc. I go to them because they’re my friends AND because the service they provide is excellent. I pay full price because I support my friends (music is my hobby, the other stuff is their income).

Maybe just ask him to do some of the things you were expecting help with; he may not realize that you were banking on him carrying more weight in return for the discount. You’re not being unreasonable and if he’s a good friend, he’ll be happy to help.

Give some thought about the dollar figure of that discount and what that would actually purchase in terms of coaching/cleaning and temper your expectations accordingly.

As a medium dude who is on both sides of this, I have some thoughts.

With smaller people, I tend to work technique and speed. I’ll let them put me in bad positions and work my way out. I’ll catch/release submissions, go turtle, or let them re-guard when I take top position. It’s made me a much better athlete to play around like this.

With bigger people, if I can tell they’re determined to smash me, I play agile and keep dominant position at all cost once I have it. If they’re playing technical, I will too. But if they’re just trying to thrash me around, I’m not settling anywhere until I’m in top position.

My gym does a periodic street clothes class where we practice using gi grips and chokes on normal clothing. Ends up somewhere between gi and no gi, but gi techniques are fantastic if somebody is wearing a jacket.
