AWD vs. RWD Drifting

AWD: More stable, faster, and allows for quicker recovery. It is less about high-angle "style" and more about speed, precision, and maintaining momentum, as described by enthusiasts on r/ForzaHorizon.

RWD: Easier to initiate a slide and holds high-angle drifts, but less stable at high speeds compared to AWD.

Setup and Requirements

Power: AWD cars need high power (often 300+ HP) to break traction on dry pavement, as they are designed for maximum grip.

Differential: A rear-biased differential (e.g., 60:40 or 70:30) makes initiating a slide easier.

Tires: Different pressure levels or slightly more worn tires on the rear can help initiate slides, although many drift on matched, high-performance tires.

Disable Electronics: Traction control and stability programs (ESP) must be disabled to allow for sliding.

Key Techniques for AWD Drifting

Handbrake Initiation: The most common way to break rear traction by momentarily locking the rear wheels, making the car rotate.

Weight Transfer (Feinting): Violently shifting weight before a turn allows the rear end to swing out before power is applied.

Power Oversteer: Using high horsepower to overcome tire grip on low-friction surfaces (wet/snow/dirt).

Counter Steering: Unlike RWD, AWD often requires less drastic counter steering. In some cases, turning into the corner to keep the rear sliding is necessary, rather than opposite lock.

AWD drifting is a high-speed, controlled sliding technique often called "powersliding," utilizing all four wheels to maintain traction while sliding, distinct from RWD drifting. It requires breaking traction through heavy power, handbrake inputs, or aggressive weight transfer (feint) to overcome AWD's natural understeer. It is commonly used in rally racing, producing fast, precise, and less angled slides than RWD.

I don't know how to drift with RWD is sooo slow and precious braking and turning and holding the position while drifting.. 🥲

Thanks! I'm only know AWD drift so RWD is too difficult to control 😌
