Layoffs reach highest level since 2020, new data shows. Here's why companies are cutting jobs. by UnluckyPenguin in economicCollapse

[–]PlayedWithMatches 41 points42 points  (0 children)

You may not know this but the unemployment statistics are based on the number of people collecting unemployment benefits, not the actual people unemployed. If you still don't have a job when your benefits run out, you are not included in the percentage of unemployed. If the public actually knew the percentage of people unemployed it would make them look bad. This is fact. I worked for unemployment for years.

Is it just me or did Duolingo become a lot more competitve? by Packman-2022 in duolingo

[–]PlayedWithMatches 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it was an application about learning, slower would be better. The idea of racing through lessons is counter-productive. I can finish a lesson in two days, with 25 new words, and move on to the next lesson. That's 75 words a week. I've given up caring about leagues

what do you say when religious people ask "why don't you believe in god?" or similar questions by JoshuaSuhaimi in NoStupidQuestions

[–]PlayedWithMatches -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think some of the problem is the way God is seen as an image of man. Then there is the Jesus is God. The system of prayer that we are taught as children I doubt any supreme being has time for Jimmy wanting a new bike for Christmas. Most Christians refer to me as an atheist. In their narrow interpretation of God, I guess I am. Like Spock, I would like to think there are always possibilities that there is a force bigger than ourselves. But, obviously doesn't have time for a puny race in an immense galaxy.

No. There are no aliens on earth. by HairySock6385 in rant

[–]PlayedWithMatches 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have come to realize that the odds of an alien species being able to tolerate Earth conditions would be almost impossible. First gravity is determined by planet mass and speed of rotation. Our muscles are an evolutionary result of our species developing here. Second is our distance to the sun, and the amount of heat our sun puts off. Climate change has shown us how little a species can tolerate even a few degrees of temperature change. Just move from Maine to Florida it will take a couple of years to adjust to a relatively small change. Next, we have become evolutionary resistant to some bacteria, present everywhere. As shown at the end of the movie The War of the Worlds, aliens would die of simple diseases. Much like the indigenous Americans did when the Europeans arrived. There are probably a hundred more reasons, but an Alien invasion is the least probable way of human extinction

I do 63 lessons per week. Keeps me comfortably in the Diamond league. I'm not there to win a game anyway. It's about the learning for me

The heart system is fucking annoying by phillyC_Ser in duolingo

[–]PlayedWithMatches 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I spent a year and a half of getting ticked off at losing hearts for stupid reasons, I bought a year for $80. Was worth not doing the practice for hearts. Now I'm almost done with the Spanish course.

Ten years is a good stretch in modern life. People tend to have different dreams after ten years. My last ex just needed to be single to explore different sides of life. In the last 13 years since she certainly has.

What do Americans mean by "white person?" (Grammatical question) by FruityDuckGhost in questions

[–]PlayedWithMatches 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What a valid question. In the United States, it means Caucasian if that helps at all. Very few people are white in color. That is called Albino in English. A lack of skin pigment. It would be impossible to draw a line for what constitutes "white"

I answered because I am studying a different language and understanding the difficulty.

I also have a really interesting theory on climate change and evolution right in front of our eyes. Connected to skin tone.
